Sympatico DSL setup?

Post by Shadycanuck »

Greetings all, I'm new in this forum and wanted to pick your brains on any way you think I may be able to improve my net performance, I primarily game online.

I'm a computer hardware guy, built a few machines so getb technical if you like I should be able to keep up.

this is what the tcp analyzer says for my setup, after using cablenut to optimize my sytem according to the instructions I read in anotehr post.

TCP options string = 020405a001010402
MTU = 1480
MTU is optimized for Windows XP PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.
MSS = 1440
MSS is optimized for Windows XP PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 63360
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63360

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
506880 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
253440 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
126720 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2534.4 kbps (316.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1013.76 kbps (126.72 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 50 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00011010

Precedence (priority) = 010 (immediate)
Delay = 1 (low delay)
Throughput = 1 (high throughput)
Reliability = 0 (normal reliability)
Cost = 0 (normal cost)

any input would be appreciated.

thanks =)

Well, firstoff, do you have a PPPoE-implemented DSL?

For Sympatico I would suggest the following settings:

DefaultReceiveWindow = 128000
DefaultSendWindow = 16384
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 200
InitialMediumBufferCount = 480
InitialSmallBufferCount = 640
LargeBufferSize = 819200
MaxFastTransmit = 64000
MediumBufferSize = 150400
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 12800
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 1024
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitsOnReceive = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 31680
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 3
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1440
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1440
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 31680
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10
DefaultTTL = 64
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 90

VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THE FOLLOWING

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot 1.2 & Ad Aware 6.0 to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster 2.5.3 to stay spyware FREE. YOU MUST USE BOTH AD AWARE & SPYBOT TO ENSURE YOU ARE SPYWARE FREE SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES.

7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in my Help & Tips link.

to answer the 1st persons question, yes it is PPoE dsl.

Mnosteel, thanks for the suggestion, I will try that.

That suggested recieve window is too large for a 1.2 meg DSL connection, should be 24038

I don't believe so, it would depend on their latency, which could easily be anywhere from 200ms-500ms. I use that same RWIN on all the Verizon PPPoE connections locally (768/128) and always get 90% or greater of their caps.

Yes, and I've tweaked thousands of Sympatico DSL connections where as you've never even used it, and I live on it. Thanks though.

Well he's better off finding his own value based on his caps and his latency, either way 24038 is not even an even multiple of his MSS.

I'm also on Sympatico High Speed DSL, I have the Ultra High speed though, it's 3mbit line.

I'm using a Nexland Pro800 Router and for some reason it's MTU is caped at 1472, so I'm settings are set up this way.

Should I change anything??? Any help would be great.

TCP options string = 020405980103030301010402
MTU = 1472
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.
MSS = 1432
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 504064
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63008

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
252032 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
126016 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63008 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 20162.56 kbps (2520.32 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 8065.024 kbps (1008.128 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 50 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

Thanks.

OK, I see Ultra as 3000/640, and with an MTU of 1472, use these settings in cablenut:

DefaultReceiveWindow = 384000
DefaultSendWindow = 81920
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 200
InitialMediumBufferCount = 480
InitialSmallBufferCount = 640
LargeBufferSize = 81920
MaxFastTransmit = 64000
MediumBufferSize = 15040
Priority Boost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 12800
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshhold = 4096
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitsOnReceives = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 77328
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 1
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAttacks = 3
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfOpenRetired = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1432
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1432
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 77328
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10
DefaultTimeToLive = 64
DefaultUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 90

your settings are going to be slightly different since you have a different MTU, try these:

DefaultReceiveWindow = 384000
DefaultSendWindow = 81920
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 200
InitialMediumBufferCount = 480
InitialSmallBufferCount = 640
LargeBufferSize = 81920
MaxFastTransmit = 64000
MediumBufferSize = 15040
Priority Boost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 12800
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshhold = 4096
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitsOnReceives = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 77760
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 1
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAttacks = 3
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfOpenRetired = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1440
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1440
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 77760
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10
DefaultTimeToLive = 64
DefaultUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 90

So far so good. I now getting 2940 Down and 680 up. I was only getting around 2100 Down and 340 up.

I'm happy.

My Nexland Pro800 router was recomended to me, so I picked it up. anyone know if they are good?

Thanks

76320 is not an even multiple of the MSS, 53 x 1440 = 76320, rounding up to the next even multiple is 54 x 1440 = 77760, which is the value I gave.

dslreports tweak thing

I ran the dslreports tweak tester and got this:

what do you experst like Mr. Carrick and mnofsteel think?

Well the Tweak Test is nothing more than the TCP/IP Analyzer, it is not a speed test, it just show your current TCP/IP settings. It doesn't matter what your settings are if you don't post a speed test with it. Do the following:

1. Find your optimum RWIN (TcpWindowSize) by using the formula in my help & tips link.

2. Put that value in CableNut and rebott to take effect.

3. Post a TCP/IP Analyzer test along with a speed test using one of the ftp links in my help & tips link.
