Yes I realize that it's dependent on the chipset...
How much memory are you using with your XP setup? What are your feelings about the amount of mem used for different applications etc.

I have a gig of RAM in my new system now, 512 megs in other system. 512 was pretty much sufficient, some of todays current games would begin to push it, I ran task monitor with some games, and they'd get around 500 megs usage. New gaming system I built for upcoming games this fall, and with RAM being so cheap (160 bucks for a gig of Crucial PC3200....peh.....why not?).
But the answer to your question, can be answered by looking at what you run on a day to day basis. 512 is pretty comfy for XP, should suffice for most users. If you wish to know, just run task monitor while you do your day to day stuff on the 'puter...see what your daily stuff uses.

I run 768 in both my P4 & Athlon XP rig and they pretty much zoom through anything I throw at it. I mostly run audio apps, games & the usual Internet Explorer & email stuff.. But I do multitask a lot and usually have the ATI TV software running on one monitor (dual displays)..
Other than that, it took Battlefield 1942 to convince me that 256MB of RAM wasn't enough, so 768 it is. Seems the perfect amount right now. 512 is perfect for most, 1GB puts you a bit ahead & 768 is right in the middle.. If I was to build a new system, I'd have to go with 1GB right now.. especially after considering all the badass games coming out later this year.
