peltier cooling help

Post by newbie1 »

i made up my mind to go with peltier cooling, how will a 120watt Drift 1.15 Potted do to cool a 1.4@1.6Ghz Athlon?

the $31.00 peltier

http://www.dangerden.com/mall/Pelts/peltiers.asp

im not going for hardcore cooling, just descent cooling maybe 15-30 degrees C, compared to my 38-53 degrees C water cooling setup

also can you post some buy links of the products to help me insulate my motherboard and CPU socket?

thanks in advance

A 120 watt Tec is too small for the Athlon. You should use a 226w. The Pelt wattage is the maximum amount of heat the TEC can pump from one side to the other when the two sides are at the same temperature. As the temp difference between the sides go up the heat exchange rate goes down. In general a Pelt should be 2 to 3 times the cpu output.

For condensation proofing the MB Conformal coating works great. You can buy it HERE and HERE.

You can also use Liquid electrical tape. It can be purchased at most marine supply stores.

For the cpu socket you can use Dielectric grease found at any auto store.

so you're saying a 120watt TEC will make my CPU temperatures go higher then the 38-53 degrees celsius i'm getting now with my water cooling setup?

I don't want enormous temp drops, just descent around 20-30 degrees celsius full load is fine

danger den has some articles on preventing condensation at their site. http://www.dangerden.com/Instructions/w ... system.htm

thanks for the links :)

also will that 120watt TEC be enough to get my temps down to 20-30 degrees celsius or will is just go higher(prevoius temps were 38-53 deg. C)?"

the reason i don't want the TEC wattage to be high is because i want to connect it to my 500watt power supply with no problems, and getting another used PSU won't fit inside my case, because there won't be any room, and the PSU's for the TEC is like 118+ which is out of my budget for 1 item

so that's why the question "will that 120watt TEC be enough to get my temps down to 20-30 degrees celsius or will is just go higher(prevoius temps were 38-53 deg. C)?" is important to me

To achieve the temps you want The minimum wattage I've seen used for a Athlon is 168 watts. Anything less will result in poor results while the cpu is under load. Also keep in mind you need to run a cold plate with the Tec.

I strongly suggest you look into using a dedicated power supply to power the Tec. Unless your running a high quality PSU like a Pro power and cooling, most power supplies cannot handle the additional load.

I almost forgot about the cold plate! i'm glad i read your post, and about the power supply, it seems to be way out of my budget, and i think i'll take my chances connecting it to my 500watt PSU (yeah im gambling with my PSU)

but for guaranteed performance i might save up for that dedicated PSU

this is my project for the summer

thanks for the help :)

I would suggest that you mind your budget. A what point is it worth your while to invest in a better CPU. 1700+XP are havable for under 60 dollars and can overclock like mad with simple fan cooling.
