laptop recommendations

What types of laptops do you guys like? I know its been discussed in the past, but as of today's latest hardware, what are your opinions for something in the $3000 range?

I'm looking to get one for work (PC/network diagnostic tools) AND play (audio production & gaming) :D

my minimum requirements are:

P4 2.4GHz
1 GB DDR SDRAM
64MB graphics chipset (RADEON 9000, GeForce 4, etc.)
40 or 60GB 5400rpm HD
built-in wireless NIC
24x10x24 CDRW/8x DVD combo
good cooling
secondary battery

What I've taken interest in so far is:

Alienware Area-51m (P4 2.66 / 1 GB corsair DDR / 60GB 5400HD / RADEON 9000 128MB / 15" UXGA / 9.6lbs / burner,dvd / internal wireless NIC / secondary battery)

Sony Vaio GX700 (P4 2.4 / 1 GB DDR / 40GB HD / RADEON 7500 32MB / 16" UXGA / 8.6lbs / burner/DVD / internal wireless NIC)

Dell Inspiron 8500 (P4 2.5 / 1 GB DDR / 40GB HD / Geforce4 4200 64MB DDR / 15.4" / 6.9lbs. / burner/DVD / internal W-NIC)

AND FOR MY FELLOW FOLDAMITES,
does anyone fold on their laptop? Does cooling become an issue? I'm thinking it might not be such a good idea, but I'd love to hear your thoughts...

thanks for the input.. :)

Worked with IBM's and I think they are pretty solid.

Any lap top under a 1000 usually sucks. Its just how it is. Ask, er, Amro!!!

BTW...Alienware laptops are desktop replacements.

I like my Toshiba Very stable and durrable. Then i would prolly go dell then alienware. Like shaggy said they are desktop replacements and they sure suck a lot of battery.

IBM eh? I too have always regarded the thinkpad as good & solid, but I'm not at all impressed with the configurable options on their high-end models.

Of the 3 systems I've listed above, the alienware is the cheapest by a couple hundred and seems to have the overkill performance I'm looking for. I'm just worried about cooling, battery life, & stability.. The Dell Inspiron is a very close second... I just can't decide..
