One machine down

Post by goobee »

Funny, one of my P3 1gig boxes keeps rebooting on it's own. I've put a new install of Win2K on it and no joy. The fans are all working so it's not an overheating issue. This machine has run 24/7 for about a year without any problems. The problem only seems to surface when the client is on.

Damn Intel box.

If you are using the -advmethods flag, you may want to remove it and try running it without it as the gromacs core seems to be a little harder on the cpu. Just a thought.

What about your power supply? If you have an extra lying around you may want to try it.

It's an IBM Netvista machine. Not sure if it's proprietary. I will open it up and check. Thanks.

so what happened? why do you have to leave me hanging like this? I need answers. I bought a new power supply and now my computer keeps randomly rebooting. my old psu was 230W and the new one is 350W, infact I've tried 4 different new psus up to 500W same problem. I have a VC31 i845 chipset. I put the old power supply in and it works fine.

Eh? You do realize that this is a 4 and a half years old thread, no? :wth:

In any case, I never figured out what was wrong with that box.

As far as power supplies go, most generic PS aren't worth a damn. They may say they put out 500 watts but in reality someone was smoking their shoe laces when they came up with that number. The power rails on cheap PS and even some "brand name" PS have a problem maintaining a constant voltage without dropping. For example, instead of 12v, it may only put out 11.63v under load.

Your original PS is probably "stronger" than the other 4 even with the lower rating.
