MS-DOS Compatibility problems.

Post by whitefang »

I am getting messages on my performace tab that indicate I have a driver windows does not recognize that is causing it to run in MS-Dos compatibility mode. How do I find out which driver it is? Also how do I find out if my pc is running with DMA activated or if my motherboard is even compatibile with that mode? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

if you have an error about windows running in msdos compatability mode alot of times something has happened to your IDE driver, if you right click My Computer and chose properties, then click the tab that says device manager, usually something will have a yellow exclamation point on it --> !

if not click the plus sign next to Disk Drives(your hard drives) and look at the properties for your hard dive probably one of them says Running in MS-Dos Compatability mode.

find out what kind of chipset your motherboard uses, like VIA or INTEL or SIS, and go get an updated driver and install it.
if that wont work, and Device Manager looks fine, then there may be a good chance you have some kind of a virus.
you might have to reload windows, but that is the worst case scenario.

No yellow or red marks, but I do have a VIA Bus Master controller and Microsoft says I may get such problems...that I should update the driver but VIA says "Users with hybrid chipsets (with a VIA southbridge and AMD northbridge for example) should obtain drivers from their motherboard manufacturer." I have an AMD processor and am not sure if I have that configuration. I have a primary and secondary ide controller. So should I update the driver? My PC is a Compaq by the way.

Here's another thing you can try.... Search the registry for any NOIDE entry and delete the key. It may also be NO_IDE or BAD_IDE be sure to search for all of them then reboot. The most likely place:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS
Be sure to search for all occurences of the above strings. Press F3 to continue searching and delete all occurences of the above strings..... :)

Tried Update.

I installed update. I hope this isn't something I should have mentioned earlier...but I only see the MS-Dos compatibility messages when I am in safe mode. Does that make a big difference? Because I am still seeing them after update.

By the way, how do I find out if DMA mode is enabled on my drives and if my drives are DMA compatible?

Thank you for all of your help! I really appreciate it!

Sorry about that...had told a friend about the safe mode and he didn't indicate that it made a difference...my bad. DMA is enabled. Thanks for your help though!! Sorry again.
