Networking problems with XP SP1
Networking problems with XP SP1
I posted this in the Networking Forum also to try to get as much feedback as I can.
Has anyone had or heard of networking problems after installing Windows XP Service Pack 1?
After Installing SP1 I found I had lost my network connection. It's a simple home network using a Linksys router so I checked everything and all appeared fine. I then uninstalled my NIC through the Device Manger and reinstalled it. Windows then detected my network conection and it worked correctly.
After installing updates for SP1 from the Windows Update Page and rebooting I lost the network connection again. Uninstalled and reinstalled the NIC again and all was fine. Rebooted and again lost the connection.
Anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be????? This one is driving me crazy.

By chance have you tried the latest drivers for you NIC? I've done quite a few XP SP1 updates, and haven't had that issue.
Only time I've had issues with any Windows Updates was with both Win2K, and 98, after including NIC drivers from Microsofts Windows Update sites....when updating Intel NIC drivers from there.

Thanks for the response. I have a Linksys 5.1 NIC with the latest drivers but SP1 could have overwritten them. I also let Windows install their drivers when I uninstalled it so that could be the problem.
Maybe I should also try to move the card to a different slot to see if it will help. Could be a conflict somewhere though nothing indicates this in the Device Manger. It says the device is working properly even though I lose the network connection all together.
Another thing that puzzles me is that when I did an ipconfig /all it showed the correct addys for the network and dns servers but I couldn't browse the web or connect to my other machine. Release and then renew also pulled the correct addys but still couldn't get on the network or the web.

Did you ever solve the problem? So far I haven't even with moving the NIC to a different slot and upgrading to the 5.1 drivers. I ended up uninstalling SP1 and everything is back to normal. This is really driving me bonkers

Hey earth, i got it working. Theres really only one way to do it. You have to reformat with no updated drivers. after your done installing SP1 you have to UNINSTALL your NIC drivers then proceed with the installation of SP1. I preferr doing the Full install and installing it yourself over the express online installation.

Thanks for the info but that really bites the big one!!!! I have XP Pro tweaked to the max and running just the way I like it. It would take forever to do it all again. I can do without SP1 for now. Thanks again.

I have the latest drivers for my Linksys V5.1 card. When the problem occured the first time I let XP install it's own drivers after I uninstalled the NIC but when I lost the connection again I installed the 5.1 drivers. As soon as I had the network connected again I rebooted to see if the problem was solved but it wasn't.
This problem has occured everytime I have tried to install SP1 since it first came out. I even waited awhile then download the full version from Windows Catalog a couple of weeks ago.
