Horrible tracert

Post by Respice »

This is a tracert I did earlier today. I have a 1000/1000 DSL line with only 1 computer on it. In theory if I was on cable peak times would have a significant impact on my pings for gaming. But DSL shouldn't have teh same affect right?

Trace complete.

Only the first three hops I can do anything about. But 250 right off the bat? Man, Qwest sucks. Any suggestions on what's going on? What argument should I bring to my ISP? Thanks.

I would just call them and say you are losing your connection continuosly and they will send someone out to check thing out.

You might also ask them how the interleave is set. If it is set to minimize data loss, the latency can be very high, intentionally. On the other hand, later hops show much lower latency.

Speaking of interleave, is that something the ISP could set per user, or is it 1 setting effecting all users on that particular dslam? or wherever interleaving is set.

Good question. I don't know, but I've read a lot of messages where individuals asked to have it changed on their account, which would suggest that it is individually adjustable.

Hmmm
I asked my ISP about the interleaving, mine is interleaved, if it could be removed.

They said outright and kind of angry, NO!

They also said, our interleaving is set across the board and we will not change it.

My ISP is HTCC, Horry Telephone Cooperative Communications

They supplied a Speedstream 5660 running in bridge mode.

Maybe someone knows for sure if Interleaving is set per user.

Covad is the only DSL provider I'm aware of who will change the interleaving setting on a per user basis and I believe they will only do so on their ADSL lines.

Anyway, I assume this is a business class SDSL line? Is routing/latency the only issue or are you also losing sync?

This is actually your normal residential line. Qwest calls it their VDSL line. Hah! (It doesn't mean Very High Speed, it means Video since they use it for cable tv as well). I pay ~34 bucks a month for it. It was supposed to be a 1000/512 line but I had so many problems when they first installed it that they upped my upload bandwith. I'm bordering 15,000 ft from my CO. They thought this would get me to go away. Wrong.

I believe part of the problem is the gateway I have to go through to get to my internet. I don't have a normal DSL modem. My DSL runs through my digital cable tv box. Because of the way my house was wired originally there is no work around to this.

I borrowed a very expensive fluke meter from my college to test the lines. The longest run was 87 feet and three wires failed four months after install. Luckily they weren't either of the Tx/ Rx pair.

To answer your question I've never had any sync problems.
