most likely thats because the flash is 'blowing out' you kids and making them much much brighter than the background. The camera then attempts to get a 'correct*' exposure on your kids, and in doing so underexposes the background, making it fall dark. Try turning off the flash and taking pictures in available light. Ususally much better and more dramatic photos are achieved this way.
*correct meaning that the subject is exposed evenly, so you can see details in both the highlights and shadows

I have taken 6 fire shots, all the same fire, all at differnet shutter speeds/Fstop settings. here they are for you
i have linked them because they are rather large.
First we start off with simply my camera on Program AE (not auto settings but the program setting).
http://66.75.118.29/fire/ae.jpg
we start off with a 10 second exposure @ F8
http://66.75.118.29/fire/10.jpg
next is a 5 second exposure @ F8
http://66.75.118.29/fire/5.jpg
next is a 2 second exposure @ F8
http://66.75.118.29/fire/2.jpg
Next is a 1/1000 second exposure @ F2.8
http://66.75.118.29/fire/1000.jpg
The final one is my favorite, a 1/1500 second exposure @ F2.8
http://66.75.118.29/fire/1500.jpg
all these pictures were taken with my canon A40 on Super Fine quality, 50 film speed, and 1024x768
