Problem file sharing in LAN...

Post by Firestorm ZERO »

I have a problem file sharing between three networked computers.

Ok. First off I have a SMC router connecting all of the computers. All computers are running Windows 2000. I have File/Printer sharing on and it binded to NetBEUI. All have the same workgroup.

When I go to My Network Places, and look for the computers. I only see the computer I'm on in the list and the two other computers are not shown. I tried typing in run "\\computername" and it says it can't find it.

Need some help on this ~_~.

I would double check my bindings...add TCP for now. Yes NetBEUI has the reputation of being more secure....but unless you are DMZ'ing a box, or have ports open/forewarded in the router, you're fine with TCP alone.

Are you drilling down far enough in My Network Places? I think MS made that a pain in the butt in 2K and XP...where you have to keep drilling down through the layers to get to your workgroup, unlike the ase of Win9X and NT 4, where Network Neighborhood showed your workgroup right in the first layer.

In 2K and XP, you have to go
Network Places
Entire Network
Microsoft Windows Network
<workgroup>
select computer

Also, try right clicking My Network Places, Search for Computer, and try a search that way.

Actually I do have open ports but just to try to get this to work I binded TCP in. But it didn't work. I tried binding only TCP and remove Netbeui. Didn't wok.

Yes I drilled in. Network places->Entire Network->MS Windows Network->My Workgroup, and the only computer I see is the computer I am on.

I did the search for computer but didn't work. I tried Add Network Place and manually put in the name "\\computername\" and it still says not found.

All computers on the network are configured the same way.

what am I doing wrong ~_~

Does the account that you are using have permissions for any files on the remote hosts?

Do you have a firewall enabled? if so try disabling it, or at least for now.

Do you have internet access on all PC's?
Can your PC's ping each other & the router as well?
Are you logged onto each machine with the exact same user account?

Hmm.. can anyone make like a checklist to look for on both computers? Ever little option to check even how simple.

So far..

1) wires :/
2) router
3) firewall disbable
4) ping each other
5) user account
6) permissions
7) same workgroup

anything I missed?

Have you setup any shares yet?? Sometimes a computer will not show up unless it has something shared.
