im still as awful as i was 2 months ago. ctf requires i know the ctf maps (which i dont), and i just cant hang with the folks in tdm. ffa i can stink up the place and not affect anybody elses w/l ratio.

however, recently i have found a great way of amusing myself in-game... The Longest Yard, i make it my mission to be the guardian of the railgun (or more accurately, the guardian of the platform. people loooove to camp there). i make the jump to the platform and jump back and just wait for folks to try and jump out there. the part that i always get a hearty chuckle from is hitting them mid-jump so they overshoot the platform. or if i dont have a railgun ill just jump right behind them and hit em with the default pea shooter. same result :p . i dont get credit for the kill, but its soo worth it. of course this kinda makes me a marked man. after about the 3rd time of being knocked past the platform or sniped off the platform they make it their personal crusade to kill me at least once.

For CTF, start out trying to defend your flag only, don't worry about getting the enemy flag.

If its a map with runes, grab Guard or Doubler.

And set team and enemy models, this way you can learn the sound of the model and know if you hear a teammate or an enemy. Keel and Tank Jr. are good enemy models, Sarge or Klesk are good for team models. Having the enemy model set is good for sounds in TDM too.

The commands:

cg_forceTeamModel Sarge
cg_forceEnemyModel keel

There are also config file generators, and really you should consider getting a custom config, its helped my game play out a lot.

Google "quakelive config generator" I would link it but the forums will edit the link because of the word sh*t. lol

cool, very much appreciated. i used that config generator to get a decent setup, and am just tinkering with the file manually now. hardest part is the mouse settings.

Also, not sure if you know, but in the QL forums after every update, the developer forum lists changed cvars and newly added ones, along with what they do.

Yep, there are days where I suck a little less than others but still pretty much suck. How do folks get so good??

as info for the CTF lovers, they now have ICTF under the instagib section.

CTF is a good start, because the goal is not always to kill the other play, since you want to cap, you make try to run for it, and because you have a base, where most times there are more friendlies than enemies. No team damage helps too. So you can get more use to fighting at a somewhat easier pace. The other game types all come down to Rail/LG accuracy, and a bit of predicted rockets.

In the practice section theres guides to faster movement and better jumping as well.

If you like to watch games:

http://www.quake-live.tv/

These guys stream pro matches of duels, TDM, CA, and CTF, as well as hold a King of the Hill tournament on wednesdays, first part open for anyone, second part is pros. Good to watch as they talk about how the fights go and what the person should have done differently when they mess up.

On the site are also "First Frag" videos, these are great duel tutorials if you want to get into that.

You play CA a ton, at least when I see you on. I think thats a weird game type as it is now, and kind of a joke, but you really need good accuracy to hang in there.

Other Stuff People normally don't really care about :)
Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 (FYI get the retail there are issues with the OEM models)

BELKIN WaveRest F8E244-BLK Black Gel Wrist Pad
XTRAC PADS Ripper Optical Mouse pad

This build is pretty much locked in right now I get the parts today via UPS I am ordering some additional ultra quiet fans the only thing I didn't actually order yet was the MS Win7 I am considering Ultimate vs Professional any thoughts on that?

Edit: Did more research on Win7 and upgrading between editions is very simple so just getting Win7 64bit professional now forgoing ultimate for the time being.

Thanks!

Yeah my first brand spanking new build since October/04 so it was long overdue, did a rebuild in Aug/08 to get me by but couldn't take being behind the times any longer.

The issue with the OEM 4000s are either very stiff keys or wobbly keys no such problems with the retail, I have an OEM one for my secondary system which doesn't get much keyboard use.

Freezetag is a no go. Id software doesn't seem to want to deal with copyright issues and other things from map and gametype makers.

The creator of freezetag has given permission to Id a while ago, but they don't seem to want to add it.

Sadly I think CA is the closest we get to RA, which sucks cuz CA is about the worst gametype. lol

Haha.

But seriously I do think it is.

Starting at 200/200 with all weapons and a billion ammo for each takes out a lot of the skill in team death match where you time and control items and weapons, and have to care about how much ammo you waste.

The maps are ok, but the spawns suck. Ok were on a team so lets have teammates spawn somewhat close, or a longer lead in.

And for weapons I'd like to see the ammo count reduced and maybe even only offer certain weapons on each map.

But that's what makes it fun to me...it makes the battles more about fighting skill rather than if you are lucky enough to spawn near a good weapon and the power ups. Everyone starts each battle evenly....It's all about how good your Gladiator skills are. I might agree with you on the spawns though, spawning teams together would be a great update to the mod. My biggest gripe with CA is that most regular/skilled CA players only like to play the same 3 effing maps over and over...they're like map lemmings.

But its not about your gladiator skills, its about who groups up better at the start of a match.

Duels test your gladiator skills. Two people start with nothing, usually one near red armor and 1 near mega, so you each head for one and then weapons and/or yellow armors and shards. Then you're both stocked up and can go after your opponent or bait him into an area as you wait from the red and mega to spawn again to try and keep the one you got at the start and steal the other. Rinse and repeat.

its one on one and most spawns are fair once you know where to go, so I consider that a better gladiator test. Tests your accuracy, prediction shots, map control, item timing, and movement.

I read something about it now counting pellets that hit per blast, versus just hit or not.

Quite a few other players today were talking about it. For a few hours today of playing, I noticed that it seems to take twice as many shots to drop a player now.

Its all in your head. The pellet spread is the same and damage has been counted per pellet for ages.

What changed in this update was that the accuracy stat in player profiles is now based per pellet instead of per hit.
