How to repair Epson Stylus color 850 printer

Post by czgu »

The printer worked find util last week. Last week my black ink used up and I changed a new one (just like I always did). But printer printed no black, only printed color. I bought 3 more black cartridges and tried one by one. They didn't work at all. Since the printer is out of warranty now. The cost for repairing is enough to buy a new one. Is there any one who can help me to find problem?

Did you buy cartridges approved for use with your specific printer model?

I had a problem with the black ink on my epson 777. I tried a new cartridge but it still didn't print consistent. The black print nozzle was partially blocked. I use refills but I think it clogged because I let it run out once too often. Any way I took the cartridge out and put a few drop's of head cleaner on the tit that goes up into the bottom of the cartridge. Put the cartridge back and did a nozzle check, problem solved. The head cleaning fluid came with my refill kit but you could use alcohol to do it.
I don't know the same things you don't know.

I see this once in awhile with the Epson color Stylus printers. Shut the printer off and you will see a white lever under the printheads, move this lever so you can move the print heads to the middle of the carriage. You will see over to the right where the prints heads prime themselves a sponge like piece. It's most likely dried up. Soak this sponge with warm water, then move the printheads back and slide the lever back. Let the printer sit for about half an hour. Then turm on the printer and prime the printheads by holding down the cleaning button on the control panel for a few seconds. You will probably have to prime them alot and go thru the whole procedure many times before you get it to print 100 %

I had problem that printer didn't print consistently. After cleaned up, it'll be OK. This time I used alcohol to clean the head. It didn't work. It does not print black at all. I also cleaned the little sponge thing and the pipe down below. The pipe was blocked by black ink. It's clean now. But still not print any black. These are two cables connected to the moving head. One is for black, another is for color. I don't know where their other side connect to. I think there are small boards on the moving head. I think these must be some control circuits. I hope that these things have no problem. Otherwise I can't repair it by myself. Is there a small hole on the nozzle head? I can't see it. I cleaned the head, but I'm not sureit is clean or still blocked. I haven't take the whole moving head off.

There is a small circuit card on each ink cartridge. The amount of ink left in the cartridge is stored there. The printer software doesn't actually know the true ink level in the cartridge it can't measure it. It just calculates what should be left based on use. When the value on the chip reaches zero you are prompted to change the cartridge. If your black cartridge leaked the printer may still think it has ink in it even it is empty. I don't know how you would check to see if the cartridge is empty. IF you put a new cartridge in and it still doesn't print I would say the print nozzle is plugged, or the print head is broken. I thought about trying to remove mine but after I put the cleaning fluid on it it worked again. I took the cartridge out and used an eye dropper to put a few drops on the nipple in the holder that sticks up into the bottom of the cartridge. I'm not 100% sure but I think the ink's are water based so a few drops of warm or hot water may work.

if it is/was a cheap printer..

I recommend 'Trash Compactors' they usually fix things like printers and stuff fairly well..

of course if it was an expensive printer you could try to fix it yourself....
