In case you didn't know, there are sites that advocate the use of wifi networks.
In fact, they are run by wifi users!
The goal is to provide people with internet access.
So now we have people AND businesses that voluntarily ALLOW free access to their pipe to the net.
Now let me clarify something....all these people take security with the utmost seriousness. While they may allow you to bum off of their net connection via wifi, they aren't allowing people to snoop through their entire system or internal network.
One of the first wifi sites to go live was one I reported on over 2 years ago.
https://www.speedguide.net/forums/ ... ess+access
http://www.nycwireless.net/
Their goal:
Our Mission
Provide Free Public Wireless Internet Service to mobile users in public spaces throughout the New York City metro area.
So I think you all owe it to yourselves to become more aware of what is going on. We are living in the information age...and it is to the benefit of society to share access to information.
[golf clap] Thats nice [/golf clap]..Id still take a bat to someone parked outside my parents leeching off their wireless, secured or not..

That is the mindset of a thief..."If you're not going to 'lock your door', I'm going to come in." The absence of a firewall equals you having the right to use someone else's connection and peruse their files at your leisure?
What a stupid and irresponsible statement.
i dont think any of you guys are getting what burke is trying to say.
firewalls were made because of the fact that people would just walk in to your computer.. I mean WTF gives you the right to go into someones network, and use THEIR bandwitdh, and look through THEIR files.
Firewalls only purpose is so that they DONT get into you system right? So, before the invention of firewalls, it was fine to barge into someones network?
WTF is up with some people these days?

True...you're at higher risk....it could be said you're asking for trouble. But....the perpetrator who steals your car, breaks into your home, or hacks into your network....just because the owner has not taken security precautions does not mean it's OK for the perp to do their stuff.
Just because I don't lock my house does not make it OK for someone to enter uninvited.
Just because I leave my keys in my ignition does not make it OK for some knucklehead pimple popper to steal my car and take it for a joyride.
-and-
Just because someone does not lockdown their wireless network does not make it OK for someone to hack in, and freeload off of my bandwidth that I pay for. It's one thing if I give my neighbor permission to stick his wappie out his window, pick up my signal, and surf using my DSL. But without my consent....it's wrong.

Key words here UOD...key words. Without the consent...they should be prepared to have their laptops smashed through the windshield of their car, and their Pringles can shoved up their you know what.

BaLa.....let`s say your computer is hacked and your hdd is crashed because of this. All your valuable files are gone. If this should happen ,in subsequence with your post you shouldn`t be annoyed at all except on yourself. Because if someone can break into your computer it means you didn`t protect it enough. Someone actually COULD enter it,and therefore it`s ok? Die Hard

Read the rest of my post first...I reported on this 2 whole years ago dude.
For the rest of you...I'm in no way...no such way condoning the illegal tresspass into someone's network for any reason.
I'm simply trying to show you that there is another valid side to this situation which is legitimate.
I do not have a crystal ball...and neither do you. So it is quite impossible for us to completely know if someone is leeching off of a private network or whether they are just trying to map a WAP against a known database of volunteers.
Big difference there.
There are many good points to this debate and it's great that we are bringing them up now rather than later.
I must admit that I could probably do without the sarcasm like golf claps. We are just talking and trying to maintain an open dialogue.
I just hope that our comments don't degrade to ad hominem attacks because then we lose sight of the goal...and any solution will fall upon deaf ears.

Are you implying that I am a thief because I'm confused by your above statement.
Let me assure you once again.....there is a legitimate group of people sharing their net connection for the benefit of everyone. The problem is...unless they are in a recognized database like the one maintained in NYC....we will have people out there seeking them out(mapping).
This is different than wardriving or warchalking.

yeah, I did read your post and I know you brought it up a long time ago. I was just surprised that I mentioned it early on in this thread and everyone was just so hell-bent on pointing fingers and making judgements, rather than taking the time to see that there is a legitamate use of WAP sharing going on......
just sort of an addendum to your later post man, thats all
