Can I tweak 56K..

Post by CableDude »

Even though I connect through a cable modem as well? Will the 56k tweaks affect my cable tweaks? :)

I use a laptop at home (Comcast) and the same laptop out of town (dialup). My tweak for Comcast works fine for dialup (RWIN = 64240)

Yes, if you use 56K tweaks on a broadband connection it will slow you down.

Yes, and it can sometimes be real dramatic.

I don't understand though... why would you want to disconnect the cable connection to go back to 56K. Once I put an NIC in my box, I yanked out the damn dial up modem :)

Correct. I use the Comcast tweak/setup for everything (to include dialup). I don’t use a dialup tweak when I’m on Comcast.

I have both my 98SE desktop and XP laptop tweaked for Roadrunner 384/2000 cable. If I have to revert to Verizon 56K dial-up when cable service goes down, I don't make any changes. My 56K connection works fine and its connection speed and throughput remain about normal.

Indeed - a large RWIN works just as well for 56K. Reducing MTU for 56K to 576, which is what's usually recommended will reduce throughput - smaller packets with a fixed overhead per packet.
