Vp6 + p3s i bought :(

Post by A_old »

Well, I got it all in, it posts, blah blah..but the system board is bad..took me 2 days to get it to install windows, tried various power supplies, hardware configs, everything except changing the floppy drive. it IS the system board.. the guy hasn't emailed me back.. so now I've a bad vp6, 2 p3s...and no cash to get another vp6. it's just my stupid luck. :( when i got it the processors were litterally covered in cpu grease...not the core, the fcpga package itself, the nbridge HEATSINK was covered...i mean what the hell..did some 5 year old build it.. so i cleaned it all up..well it still locks up..usually when i open device manager.. who knows, but i think he knew it was defective..i've even tried reinstalling on new hard disks..talk about rape.

My VP6 died over a month ago...was running my SBS server at the house.

Can't even post to BIOS anymore...disconnected everything....lights up, spins fans...that's it....not even a beep.

i have been eyeing ServerWorks chipset boards (my VP6 looks to be dead also. i thought it was the PSU, but that didn;t pan out.

something like the PIII-based Tyan Thunder boards (HEsl, LE and LE-T). the only thing is, some of them require registered ECC SDRAM. they are fantastic boards.... stable as a rock and very very fast memory performance.

they aren't cheap, though. doubt you could find one for less than $120 used on eBay (depends on model. if you found one w/o integrated U160 SCSI and no AGP port (integrated VGA) you may find one for about that much).

I assume you've tried reflashing the bios, and disabling any extra features like raid, USB, etc etc?

Tried it...all...thanks..

David, I've decided against that..since I could just get another bad, used board...and with the money ontop of what I've already paid, I could have purchased an entirely new setup w/ the cash. I just really don't have it.. I'm going to try and get as much cash as I can out of it (with fair warning of course, stating the obvious problem w/ the board) and see what I can make back. Oh well.

did you try using memtest86 on your ram?
How bout using only 1 CPU?

Try monitoring your voltages very carefully, especially the VTT, it shouldn't flucuate much.

I don't see how the board could be like this unless maybe theres some bad caps, or a component missing or cut traces.

I missed where you said you were loading XP on it. XP will not work on that board. I can attest to that personally. I have 2K running on mine.

well nm, i spoke too soon, does the same thing but it takes longer, close to 10 minutes now....i'm baffled...cut traces is a possibility.. there's a small scratch next to the dimm slots, but it isn't deep and the traces seem in tact (doesn't look like it's thru the clear coat)

XP seems a bit particular with regard to certain chipsets. From my experiences, it with not o/c as well as some of the earilier OS's
