HELP! Tried setting up new boot screen for XP but it crashes every time I restart
I installed a new boot screen for Windows XP by going in safe modeand overwriting ntoskrnl.exe @ c:\windows\system32
But every time I restart, in safe mode or normal mode, I get a blue screen and it restarts. I can't even get into Windows. Anyone know how to delete ntoskrnl? I tried going into the command prompt mode with a 98 boot disk but I couldn't find the command name for it, all I know is c:\%windir% and if I type in c:\%windir%\system32 or c:\windows\system32... I get an error.
Anyone know how to extract the ntoskrnl.exe from a XP CD from the command prompt or at least delete the messed up ntoskrnl? Anyone ever had the same problem?

but its good to have the learning experienceOriginally posted by Burke
For one thing, you won't be able to delete it from a DOS boot disk if you formatted the C: drive with NTFS.
You might try searching on how to use the Recovery Console.
Lesson learned...if you're not sure what you're doing, don't do it.

What in the world made you want to delete ntoskrnl.exe? I don't think thats the right way to change the boot screen.
Do like Burke said, try the recovery console, think thats your only hope. Maybe ask Sid,think he is good with the console.

I got this from MSFT
the actual file may be corrupt so copy NTOSKRNL.EXE off of the installation CD onto the %systemroot%/system32 directory.
You may need to edit the boot.ini if Linux is installed onto a system. During installation DiskDruid (Red Hats disk configuration utility) may create a primary partition (depending on disk configuration) and although the extended NT partition was there first (and at the beginning of the disk), the primary partition affects the numbering of the partition() parameter of boot.ini. Changing it from (1) to (2) (for example) allows the successful boot of NT.
so I can I actually do this if I don't have a NTSF-compatible boot disk

I didn't delete it, I replaced it. I have a backup somewhere on my HD

of course... always backup!Originally posted by Burke
Yes, but people should never start fiddling around with critical system files until they've backed up, researched on how to troubleshoot, etc.

I FIXED IT, and I did that by disregarding most of your posts
I went to the recovery console like you guys said, and I just deleted the ntoskrnl.exe file and then it booted up magically
Good, glad you got it fixed, and only had to disregard MOST of the posts.
And if I am not mistaken, W2K/XP makes backups of critical system files, so that if one is missing on bootup, it can copy the backup where it needs to and continue on...
