Whose reviews do you respect the most?

Post by Ken »

Not BS sites that have no technical background, but good sites that do comprehensive reviews that you can trust...

I like Anandtech, DansData, [H]ardOCP, and a few others.
I will add some more later, but let's hear some of your favs...

if the AMD seminar I whent to is any indication...the companies send them TONS of crap to review, depending on who sends the more expensive stuff, that's who gets the better review...

[H], OCWorkbench, HotHardware, Hexus, Anand, but definitely not Rodney Reynolds over at 3DGameMan. Nothing personal, but spending 7 minutes of an 8-minute review going over what comes in the box isn't my idea of a quality review.

hear hear!

I LOVE the idea, the idea is wonderfull, but he's too brief and doesn't go into detail and show the stuff hardcore people want to see at all.

Of course longer more detailed ones would of course take more bandwidth and size, but still, even in 8 minutes he could do more rather then just drag on about what the features are, what we wanna see in a video review is it WORKING and doing overclocking and stuff straight up in our face :D

I disagree about Tom being Intel-biased. I remember that when the Athlons first came out, he was one of their biggest cheerleaders, and still is to this very day. I think Tom rubs a lot of AMD people the wrong way because that he's completely unforgiving of the Taiwanese chipset and mobo makers; i.e. MSI, VIA, SiS, etc. AMD chipsets can turn the simplest upgrade project into..... an adventure :) .

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Tom. I think the glut of hardware sites and the half-baked "reviews" that are produced nowadays have made people forget that he was one of pionners and inventors of the whole Internet hardware review industry. For a few years in the early/mid 1990's, he was pretty much the ONLY source for reviews and news on non-manufactured computer components. Don't forget that he practically invented the whole overclocking and PC tweaking culture. These days, he just does cushy reviews of monitors and PDA's, but hell, that just means he's retired and working for fun, so more power to him. I learned a hell of a lot from his reviews and articles, so I give it up to Mr. Pabst.

Oh my, that was quite a rant... soz. Um.. so to close it up, www.2cpu.com, www.aceshardware.com, www.storagereview.com, and www.microsoft.com/technet are good. Phew. :)

I guess my site is one of the BS sites that Ken referred to, but still, I do my best and tell it like it is like my MSI 845 Ultra-ARU review.
How is that for comprehensive? I learned WAY more than I wanted to know about that board. :D

But anyway...

I still have a lot of respect for Dr. Thomas Pabst, though I think his site is a bit slow in producing reviews (and the news portion has been contracted to The Register) and he does not write many things personally anymore.
His commentaries are definitely a pleasure to read. I wish he could write Second Hand Smoke type articles more often.
