cablenut settings?

Post by techman »

Sbc/yahoo (sbcgobal.net) 758/128 (I think)
I am running win2k
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; sbcydsl 3.12; YComp 5.0.0.0)
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

TCP options string = 020405ac01010402

MTU = 1492
MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.

MSS = 1452
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1452, which equals MSS.
MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 63888
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2555.52 kbps (319.44 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1022.208 kbps (127.776 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 50 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

I am getting only 319/109

yours:
...BTW, will a new NIC help? My NIC is rather old...
No - NICs are still vvv.similar ...but OTOH ...with acctual prices... :D
IMVHO most important are:
>the LATEST driver (firmware) for your NIC
>latest DSLmodem
>good wire

NEW NIC options
1. Some of new NIC have (too)many settings witch you never use.
2. it depents on your modem.
Same of DSLmodem have 100mbps from LAN side - check yours in: manual, monafacture or ISP.
If so your NIC can be set to 100mbps FullDuplex (if you have option in it)
But most of DSLmodems have 10mbps from LAN side - good for vvv.old NIC
3. pay attention that PCMCIA PC Card from laptop side have max 25mbps even with 100FullDuplex option
4. most of routers have 100mbps from LAN side (but 10mbps fromWAN)
in this case your NIC can be set to 100mbps FullDuplex.
It will be sharing with another PCs

BTW option auto in NIC ConnectionSettings is not recomended
check 10 or 100FullDuplex according to above points

PS check for NIC prices
but NONE improvement willbe suspected
but if you looking for hdw improvement upg your RAM up to 512MB :2cool:
yours OS 2k is simply THE BEST

after recomendations I use NICs:
EtherFast®10/100 Integrated PC Card PCM100 http://www.linksys.com/Products/product ... 6&prid=100 for old laptop
EtherFast®10/100LAN Card LNE100TX v5'1 http://www.linksys.com/Products/product ... 26&prid=31 for desktop

What can I do??

Your settings are fine so don't worry about them, the problem lies elsewhere. How far are you from the CO? Try the following things and see if they help.

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot, anything checked in red is spyware and safe to remove.

7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in my Help & Tips link.

:D ;)

RE: new NIC
:D acctualy I found interesting review with 5 NICs & w2k vs w98se
We Take The Lid Off NICs From 3Com, Intel And SMC
http://www4.tomshardware.com/network/20 ... index.html Tom's Hardware Guide

I'm surprised with:
...CPU utilization was zero percent for all cards when running Windows 2000...
compare to w98se
