You'll still be able to play networked games fine. Being able to "Browse" network neighborhood is different...just because you cannot see other computers in the first level of the network, doesn't mean you cannot eventually see them, or "talk" to them.
First, TCP/IP is all within the same scope, probably something like 192.168.1.XXX if you're behind a router, and all computers are able to get to the internet.
Next, for all the computers to see each other in the first level of network neighborhood (or My Network Places), they have to be in the same Workgroup. If the workgroups are different, simply means you have to drill down a layer deeper. Or you can do "Find Computer", or "Search for Computer"...and find them that way.
You don't need NetBEUI either, just plain TCP/IP will work if you're all on the same IP scheme, which again, you should be if you're on a router.
Also, if they are Win9X machines, make sure "File and Printing Services for Microsoft Networks" is loaded.

don't you need the same username and password for computers that have windows 2k and xp to see other computer? i didn't read the last part of the question asking if they can still play multiplayer games if they don't see each other.. He also needs the right protocols like tcp/ip or netbeui to see other computers on his network..

Not needed to "see each other". If you want to have "shares"...such as printers or folders....then you have to add a user account to the computer doing the sharing...that user account being the username and password of the computer accessing the share.
Crazy...NetBEUI....all by itself....being the only protocol, and on small networks, could browse and transfer quicker on Win9X machines. It has less overhead than TCP/IP. Going by the book, it's for networks of up to 200 computers, but due to it's "chattiness"...tends to start bogging down networks of over 100 computers...so it's commonly used in just small networks of 50 or under. Have't really read much comparing it to TCP on later OS's. I'd say on networks which also use TCP/IP...it will not add to transfer speeds...since you are now using two protocols...(more overhead). You want to use one, or the other. You can use NetBEUI for networking services, and unbind TCP from networking services, only leaving it running in the background for internet and games. That way your kinda running 1 1/2 protocols.
