avi

Post by SVO-1 »

i can view some .avi files fine in windows media player but others only have sound. i notice at the bottom of the media player, it says "requesting codec" & then it says "error - codec not downloaded". could this be why it don't play right ? ? ? if so, how would i find the codec ? ? ?
Thanks -

Yes, thats what it is. There are several codecs out there now. And if you don't have the right one, what you are experiencing happens, or the video doesn't play at all.

check out http://www.divx.com/ under the software tab for a bunch of codecs.

I've also had good luck with Angel Potion codec

that's a damn good question. I've always just done trial and error. Just install, and try to play. If it works  if not, get another codec :D

not many downloads tell you what they used. Hard to do when you are downloading it 1000th hand most times. If you found the original person who compressed the video then you would be able to find out.

Incidentally, if you find the guy who made it, tell him we want more video's of just his wife! lol

The file format is encoded in the first few bytes of the file. I used to have(maybe still do) a file that tells you format. I look for it.

You can download a tool here called GSpot 2.0 that will give you all kinds of info on any avi/divx file. It will tell you if you have the codec installed or not and which you need.

The vast majority of AVIs that won't play are fixed by installing the latest DivX codec, and a few others will round out the package.

These are the ones I use and they play every AVI I've come across. If you get these, you'll probably be set. If you're not able to play an video file even with these installed, it's probably the result of a bad encoding job.
