Can't Connect to DSL!

Post by whitefang »

I have had Roadrunner cable modem for a couple of years now with no problems. It still works great! But Verizon DSL is cheaper. So I decided to give it a try. My account has been activated for nearly two weeks now and I have never been able to connect. They show no traffic on my lines. They even sent me a new modem. I can never get a valid IP address. My ethernet light just blinks about once very five seconds. They sent a tech and he could connect to the network on my phone line just fine with his laptop, but had no suggestions on what could be up with my pc. They aren't trained for that! If anyone could possible offer any suggestion as to what settings might be ok for Roadrunner and cause DSL not to function, I would really appreciate it!!! If worse comes to worse I will stay with Roadrunner. I am pulling my hair out and would like to conquer this if possible. Thanks in advance!!!

A little more info would be helpful :D .

1. What OS?

2. PPPoE or Normal DSL?

3. Are you using a router?

4. Are you using a firewall?

Let's start with that and go from there. :D ;)

OS is 98se, no firewall, no router, I think normal DSL, but how do I check that? It's Verizon DSL.

yes

yes, I have a user id and password, but I thought it was just for my email account. When I have tried to use their cd that came with the modem to set up my account, it just says their may be a network connection problem, after I give it my userid and password info.

Yup you are on PPPoE. Make sure your Ethernet card is set to DHCP and has no info set in it from your old account, then confirm it's working then install the PPPoE software, or run it. SHould be a short cut on your desk top after you finished installing the CD.

Here is some more info.

Verizon is my DSL provider, OS is 98SE, my advertised speed is up to 768Kbps/128Kbps.

Analyzer results:
TCP options string = 020405ac01010402

MTU = 1492
MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.

MSS = 1452
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1452, which equals MSS.
MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 65535
Note: Under Windows 9x, if you have RWIN set to any other value, and the Analyzer reports 65535 you might need to install the MS Vtcp386 fix.
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63888 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 51 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

I cannot do a speed test, since Verizon won't even connect.
If any body knows how to remove old Roadrunner info, please let me know.

I tried that, but no ***ing luck!! I even hooked up the modem to my friends laptop (he's running Windows 2000), on my phone line.....no problem at all. Modem started working immediately on startup, decent connection speed of 580K. I am about to give up on this thing. It just doesn't make any sense! Thanks for the suggestions though. I am still open to more. Thanks again.

RoadRunner shouldn't have installed anything on your pc. Have you ever had a firewall installed? If so which one? Try uninstalling the software from Verizon and rebooting and then reinstall it. Also do the following:

1. Under your Configuration tab for your Network settings make sure you have only the needed protocols.

2. Install the vtcp 386 patch and the NDIS Update.

3. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

4. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

5. Clear your temporary internet files.

6. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

7. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot, anything checked in red is spyware and safe to remove.

8. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in my Help & Tips link.

:) :D

Victory!!!

Justy FYI. I finally broke down and bought a new Siemens Ethernet card. And the DSL works fine now!! No problems at all. Must have been a defect in the old card! I still don't know exactly why the Cable would work with the card and DSL not, but oh well. Problem solved! But thanks for all your help and suggestions! I really appreciate it!!!
