My niece just got dsl and I did some speed tests on it. Should be getting the same speeds as I do at home 930up/128down.

Not sure why but we are only getting 138up/79down.

Something I noticed in her settings. The software lists her Server as being in the City she lives which makes sence to me it's a large city.

When I run the Mtu test here it lists her Server as being another city almost 400kilometers away?? I don't understand why that would be.

Any insight??

Also do the following:

1. Take a look at the DSL Wiring Article.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot, anything checked in red is spyware and safe to remove.

This may also be due to her distance from the CO, but first try all of the above and see where you are at and post back.

also try turning the dsl modem off and on I do that when i'm lagging really really bad it works

Thanks...not sure if I can walk her through the motions or not. I loaded in the same settings I use when I was there and it didn't change a thing.

It may have to wait till we go there again. We tried turning the modem on and off didn't make a difference. The modem they have is a speedstream model.

Her web pages open and loaded fast but it was just the downloading and speed tests that sucked for numbers.

I'm still not sure why it would list a different server for her when I test here as to the one listed in her settings for the dsl?? Like I said she lives in a large city her server should be local...unlike myself where my provider/server is an hour and half away.

I did ask her when I was there about the phone line wiring and there wiring was just replaced last year because of a static problem with the line.

I was wondering if it would make a difference in the distance from the phone jack to the modem. She didn't have a phone jack near the computer and we had to run a 25' line from the jack to the modem??? Would that make a difference?

Hi Suzie

Ok couple of things..
Most of the installers that end up going out to do that supposed proffesional install will tell you NOT to use the flat extension lines they get allot of interferance from things that put out RF noise

That can slow things to half speed.

You also need to look at the connections from the modem to where the line comes in the home if they have any acid build up that can slow it down.

Im sure you may have read my Article that I did with the Telco admin on his house with the Cat5 and then did an a few other places not to mention all the other people that have done the same to there homes.. That just about kills all the RF noise and ends up with a clean connection.

My suggestion would be to do something in the area of getting her connection cleaned up
by the Article.
OR go get a 25 foot Cat5 cable for networking and put the Modem/bridge by the phone jack and run the Cat5 to the computer.

Make sure its no where near any 2,5Ghz or 900Mhx phone device or Halogen device with a dimmer
If the modem is under the Monitor that can slow things up or cause reboots of the modem. Iv seen it happen.

Distance is another thing you can both be on the same ISP and because shes 1000 feet farther it can mean 100kbps esp if there is a coil that was overlooked on the line.
The only way to test for that is to have the ISP run a test on the Line. Most ISPs and Telcos will test the line but its usually after the connection lately.
The twinkys (techs) are putting in more and more shared lines based fully on Glite where in some areas Glite is used you maynot have been put 100% on that similar to wht I have now So your speed will differ by 150 to 200kbps as well.
excample Im on a Glite modem but my connection is on a Dry pair. I get an average of 187KB/sec and hit usually around 210KB/sec on line tests where the web is running around 50ms. Lately the web has been around 80 to 90ms overall.. When I say "the web" I mean the "Web US North America" not my little corner of the world.

You should also run a few tracerts to the web see if she times out or has high latency.. Again you might have the same provider not nessassarrrrlllly the same redback or CO
CO = Connection Office
Redback = in laymans terms. the Athentication server.

I wondered about the 25' line...thanks for clearing that up. I thought I'd have a look and see about running a new jack in the room she wants the comp in. It was late the other night when I was there, so I couldn't really check that stuff out.

B. Turned off the DSL modem
C. Turned on the DSL modem and waited for the lights to turn solid green.
D. Turned the computer back on and tried connecting.

If you haven't already completed all 4 items, please do so now if possible & let me know when you are done.
