Why can't I access this site??

Post by CRUZMISL »

Hi,

I am trying to connect to http://www.corvetteforum.com and I always get an error. I get the IE page explaining the page doesn't exist but it does.....

I have a friend using another service other than Cogeco (my isp) and he is having no problems. I can also access it from work. Could Cogeco be filtering this site somehow? They claim there is no problem. I did a trace route on the site and it completed so something is weird.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Joe

PS I also have another friend using the same isp and he cannot access it either :(

Try doing a traceroute to the site. If the traceroute starts, then the DNS has resolved the address. It will probably appear that you are not reaching the site (the site does respond to ICMP packets) but I'd suggest that the problem is in the return path. You can note where the traceroute fails.

Here is a successful one from Columbus, OH:

Something seems to be very wrong. Your traceroute doesn't go to http://www.corvetteforum.com. It doesn't even come close.

At the top of the traceroute did it report 209.196.48.54 as the IP for http://www.corvetteforum.com? If it did, your ISP has a badly fouled up DNS server.

Kip, I believe you are correct. With all the outages this morning I think they must be working on fixing it too.

mnosteele, what do you mean by 'zonealarm' ? Why would ZA block one particular site? You know something your not elaborating on?

There are some links on that site that bring up a 'error' page, but most work for me now.

It could be something else Norm but the latest few versions of ZA have ad blocking software and a pop up stopper built in that causes more graphics and page cannot displayed errors than you can imagine. He had the same problem trying to use the TCP/IP Analyzer...... just one of the many reasons I don't like ZA. :) :D

Ah, I see what you mean now thanks for the reply.

I haven't used ZA in a long time and wasn't aware of it's new features. I just rely on my router and common sense now for security. Too much bloat on my system with all the security software.

I think Kip was right though. Seeing that I'm on Cogeco as well and had the same problem on that site it was most likely a DNS server problem. Cogeco has been upgrading for the last few weeks and there have been numerous outages as well as surfing problems lately. Quite a few error pages recently on sites I know are online. Even the TV signals have been going south for short periods.
It's getting better as time goes on.

I would assume now that it's possible some of the linked pages on that site may not exist yet, still being written. I could be wrong though.

I just reread your reply mnosteele, and now think it's possible CRUZMISL has a java problem.

May need the Virtual Java Machine MS, or the Sun version to fix the problem. That site is full of java

Hmm, the java works well on other sites. I even shutdown ZA and still the same. Must be a server error.... I almost give up.

ZA and ZA PRO are still the best firewall i have used,It is a little overwhelming for the average user, but a power user will love zone alarm. As it will block OUTGOING connections as well as incoming. It will stop spyware and notify you something is sending out packets that you havent requested to be done.Helpful in that it lets you know to run Ad-aware or similiar spy-ware removal tools.

Also if you happened to get a trojan or worm,it will block access to the network for them also.IMO its the best there is,and ZA is FREE! and does more than allot of $150.00 apps i have tried.
