thinking about going to a p-4...........

Post by Mark »

got a few questions for ya all so please bare with me :)

was looking at some boards and thought about the abit IT7-max2 , anyone tried it yet ?
also should i pay $236 for a 2.53 cpu or $455 for a 2.8 retail cpu's ? Which one would over clock the most or do they all OC well ? Also how fast do they run F@H versus a XP2400 ? Now moving on to memory i am looking at 512 corsair 3200 c-2 for about $220 or maybe the 3500 for about $240, probably just get the 3200 ? All these are from newegg with free shipping, haven't really shopped around for better prices just yet. Also looking at getting a 9700 pro, maybe in a few weeks.

every thing else i think i can take from my current PC for the time being.

I'd get the slower cpu and get more memory with the money saved. I have 512megs of corsair 3000xms cas2, and I love it. however, it just isnt enough memory.

I have oc'ed my p4 to 2.37 and 2.21 and guess what... barely any differance, at least nothing you can notice. Just how fast am I going? I can encode a 2 hour movie using vbr(2-pass) in less then an hour sometimes.

Dont know about the mobo, but I cant stand my msi. wish I was using that abit...

my info is LIMITED on this one.

however, it seems that the faster processor oc less easily. for example, my p4 1.8 EASILY reachs 2.37. Will a 2.8 also oc 600mhz with no tweaks?

LT-73 , i have been thinking about doing this for awhile, sorry bud :P.

might wait for the xp2700 or try and unlock my XP1900 but i think i may need the corsair to really do it right ?

That mushkin you're using now should give ya the speed you're wanting. The 1900 on the other hand isn't a good overclocking chip but the ram will make up for it and give it that xtra push.

I'm gonna hang on for the 2600 or the 2800 and the 8K5A board since i'm leaning over to H2o ;)

With stock cooling, a pinch over 3.0 is were the P4 tops out. The 90 nm cores from fab D1D in Oregon will probably go quite a bit higher.

I have the 2.8 @3115, with THIS board, and Corsair XMS 3200, Stable and very impressive. This Mobo is great, It just about OC's by itself. just my input. :)

hmm... very interesting...

anyways, I'd still go with the slower cpu and more memory. you'll see a faster computer speed with the more ram. more preformance for the buck in my HUMBLE opinion.

thanks for the response guys, if i go with a radeon 9700pro card how important is it that i get a MB with a 8X AGP slot ??

PainMantra, that board looks sweet, how is the onboard sound compared to a sound blaster card ?

is there a certain stepping or whatever i should look for in the CPU ?

zooner, i have a gig of ram right now and rarely ever use more than about 300MB of it so i think 512 will do for now, at the price of the corsair $200 is just too much to get a gig right now.

What about with better cooling??? What is the highest you have seen someone get a P4 up to on this board w/ air cooling only, no water?

abit it7 2.0 P4 overclocked
Ext. Clock (cpu/agp/pci) - (133/66/33)
pct bus frequency - 33mhz fixed
multiplier - x20
dram ratio h/w strap: High
dram ratio (cpu:dram) 1:1
-core voltage 1.65v
dram voltage 2.5v

system temp 29/84
cpu temp 45/113
cpu fan 6026 rpm
pwr fan 1430 rpm
cpu core voltage 1.63v
ddr sdram voltage 2.5v
I/o voltage 3.22
+5v 4.99v
+12v 11.9v
vtt voltage 1.37v
Vddq voltage 1.53v
battery voltage 3.05v
standby voltage 4.96v

air cooled.. 2.66Mhz

thats not all.. I've had it up to 2.7Mhz but the voltage for the ram has to go up and I didn't have enough bealls to do it for any longer than a few minutes..I need better ram I think..
get it up, get it in, get it out, and don't mess up my hair!

It is a great board, It has this program called Easy Tune 4, Its software based, you can set it up and it will test stability then reboot and apply the settings, or you can OC in bios. I would for sure get the 533FSB P4, that 845PE chipset is perfect for it. As for the audio, Can't say, Disabled it at first boot, I love my Audigy. But the LAN is top notch.

NO! Get the GeForce 4 Ti 4600! I've used them both with my friends and at work. The GeForce 4 runs much nicer in my opinion.

well i am looking @ this abit board for $179 @ newegg , comes with support for serial HDD, and a media reader thing, and a highpoint raid controller.

or maybe this gigabyte board for $137, no serial HDD support and a promise raid controller.

i don't really think i need the serial plugs since i don't think i will be getting those kind of drives for quite some time, kinda leaning towards the abit board but am open to suggestions ??

also do i really need an 8X agp slot for a redeon 9700 pro ?

come on folks give me some suggestions, i wanna spend some dollars :)

I would go with the abit IT7 Max 2 I just bought one. ANyway on 8x Agp though. If you don;'t want the serial ata get the IT7 Max its about 60 bucks less and has everything the Max 2 has except the ps/2 ports and the serial ata. }

You know that the IT7 Max 2 comes with a convertor to make you eide drive into a serial drive. Its called serialla or something.

some friendly advice

Post by terrancelam »

none of the 8X really works, just about every *X agp board has problems running at 8X AGP, espcially with the 9700. Though the performance on the 9700 is better by a bit, I think the 4600 would be a better investment as it not only not far off, but the driver support and compatibility is better in general.

As far as AMD vs Intel, Intel is the way to go if you have the cash for it, the peformance for certain things is faster. For gaming, I doubt you'll see a huge difference between the two companies with anything over 1.8ghz.

stay away from MSI boards, the Abit one looks like and Gigabyte had improved their quality a lot these days so give them a good look, most of their newer stuff included on-board support for RAID, IEEE1394 and USB 2.0.
