Wal-Mart Pulls Video Games Off Shelves
Wal-Mart Pulls Video Games Off Shelves
SAN DIEGO, 11:28 a.m. PDT October 18, 2002 - A local Wal-Mart store has made the decision not to sell certain violent video games, as a reaction to the Washington, D.C., area sniper attacks.
The video games that are being recalled feature snipers targeting and killing innocent people. Wal-Mart officials said they pulled at least seven video games off store shelves, including Terminator, Dawn of Fate, Tribes Aerial Assault and Rainbow Six, and Rogue Spear.
"If the snipers didn't have violence in their life, I don't think they'd be as violent as they are. I agree wholeheartedly with Wal-Mart in taking the video games off. And I think they should stay off," said Bobbie Harkey, a Tierrasanta resident and Wal-Mart customer.
Wal-Mart headquarters told NBC 7/39 that individual stores are allowed to make the decision to pull these products.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Anyways... what the hell does he mean by that? that friggin hick. That's like saying.. if ducks don't have feathers on their body... I don't think it'll be as furry as they are"
Makes no friggin sense. They didn't pull "Redneck Deer huntin'" off their shelves cos it's not violent. Shooting a harmless animal many many yards away with a high powered rifle is clean fun eh?
yeehaa
Lookie im gonna go shoot people in real life because i play video games that have guns in them like rogue spear, its so realistic!
good lord people!!! grow up!

I really wish things of this type weren't so subject to kneejerk reactions. If anyone really thinks a video game with a sniper type element will train someone to hold an actual rifle, operate it correctly, account for windage, ad nauseum, then they are even more stupid than they appear. Sharpshooting does not come out of a box.

video games are an easy target, period.
it's all about where the BIG money is and if they pull off a couple of games how much money are they losing? the blind sheeples(ie hyprocrites) will praise walmart for doing it. Yet, the gangsta rap albums are ok for a 12 year old boy to buy. why arent they pulled? because the praise for doing it isnt as great as the loss of money.

Thank God someone who thinks like me, I am not alone.
I'm sorry, the sarcasm doesn't reach me. Shall I tell a few sarcastic jokes about the aforementioned things? No one will mind with a smiley, right? How 'bout a joke concerning skydiving and the World Trade center? Hee Hee!! Ho ho!! Don't mind my sarcasm!!
Some things are not meant for sarcasm. This is one of them.

Today, it is the largest importer of Chinese-made products in the world, buying $10 billion worth of merchandise from several thousand Chinese factories.

Violations Against Female Children: The one-child policy, in conjunction with the traditional preference for male children, has led to a resurgence of practices like female infanticide, concealment of female births and abandonment of female infants. Female children whose births are not registered do not have any legal existence and therefore may have difficulty going to school or receiving medical care or other state services. The overwhelming majority of children in orphanages are female and/or mentally or physically handicapped.
The one-child policy has also contributed to the practice of prenatal sex identification resulting in the abortion of female fetuses. Although the government has outlawed the use of ultrasound machines for this purpose, physicians continue the practice, especially in rural areas. Thus, while the average worldwide ratio of male to female newborns is 105/100, Chinese government statistics show that the ratio in the PRC is 114/100 and may be higher in some areas.

Yes, I'm plenty riled up about it. Walmart made their decision based on how it might look to the politically correct crowd. Not what they said, but what they might say. For too long our society has based its statements far too heavily on how are others might feel about them and self censored.
We have become a society of comedians and milquetoasts. We censor out the real horror of things like 9/11 because its hurts our feelings, rather than admit that atrocitities exist, and that they can happen to us as well as other people. We need to harden our hearts to those that would destroy us and take away our freedoms, not feel sorry for them. And trivializing these things to make us feel better, be it through humor or otherwise, diminishes us all.
You're damn skippy Chemgeek:

thanks for bringing that up cybotron r_9.
that's the single biggest reason I wont shop there. Even if I have to pay more, I'll shop somewhere else. It's not even that they buy almost everything from china that bothers me, so much as they used to have HUGE signs saying 'made in the usa' and praising items made here.
It was only recently that I learned how walmart only buy less then 10% of it's stock from made in the usa sources. Also, for every three jobs they create; they distroy two.

whoa. seems some ppl don't like wal-mart...or the fact they are pulling games. to me, i don't really care what wal-mart does. they could get rid of all the games, there are other sources. perhaps wal-mart isn't all it's suppose to be. either way, i shop there because it's cheap. i don't really care where they get their products or what they will/won't sell.....i have other stuff to worry about. as far as making fun of recent events, i never did that. all i was doing was continuing on someone elses statement that skills learned in a game do not carry over to the real world.
geesh.
geesh.

There is no need is flaming others here, Chrome......please take more time to read the posts...you are singling out one person here and ranting your personal vendetta about Wal-mart against him....not cool.
Now my 2 cents...political correct or not...it's Wal-marts decision. It's a business. No more, no less. If they choose to quit selling panty hose, who cares? It's their business. If they decide to start selling jumping gummy bears and quit selling blue hats....who cares? It's their business....
If by not selling what they deem violent games..affects the bottom line, your going to see those same games, right back on the shelves.
If what they do bothers anyone.....quit buying from them.
You can probably find them same games, cheaper on-line anyway.
*shrug*
anyone want to go in on an out lot at the local wal-mart and open a games store? High traffic area, no competition...until they find out of course.
I applaud them for doing what they think is right, IF that's why they are doing it (and not just for publicity) AND they stick to their guns, so to speak heh.
NOW, that's not to say I agree with them pulling them off the shelves for the reasons they give. But there is something to be said for having principles and sticking by them. (once again, not likely here, but there is a chance)
After all, what miniscule percentage of their sales to video games account for anyway? Seems it's something they can do to "look good" (since they are really a "heart of america" type store- down home and all) without losing any real bottom line. My guess would be that most avid gamers don't buy their games from wal-mart anyway. could be wrong, especially in some areas. but you get the point.
Any one want to bet they still sell knives in the sporting goods dept though?

this reminds me very much of the classic "my right to freedom vs. you right to freedom" arguement.
keep in mind that if i push my right to freedom to it's very limits, it will invariably infringe upon someone else's right to freedom.
if i wanted the freedom to let's say..... shoot aborted fetuses into non-vegetarian mincemeat with a .50 caliber machinegun while wearing a leather peek-a-boo bondage suit and chanting "idi amin and jesus frickin' christ, sittin' in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g......"........ i could think of maybe 10 different types of people that would think it;s a violation of their "freedoms".
what am i trying to say?..... well, i am as lost as all you folks. there must be a point there somewhere.

I can sum up what I get out of that in two simple words;
Leather fetish.

This is totally stupid, I get so sick of stuff like this. Just like when 9-11 happened, they postponed the spiderman movie because it had a scene with the wtc center. I mean just because they get rid of everything wtc related does not mean people will forget.
fantastic point, davy. that never occurred to me (pulling the games and not the guns).
making a point to appear PC is one thing........ but is always very irritating to see people go about their business with inherantly faulty logic. not to say they shouldn't be able to run their business as they see fit (they should be able to), but their motives should be thought out a bit more IMO.
