NIC settings

Someone plz tell me if there is a way to optimize the following settings of my NIC

Early Tx Threshold = 15
Link Down Power Saving = Disable
Link Speed/Duplex Mode = 10 Half Mode
Network Address = Not Present
Buffer Receive Size = 64K bytes
WakeUp on ARP/PING = Enable
WakeUp on Link Change = Disable
WakeUp using APM Mode = Disable

Plz tell me what the optimal setting are. I am on RR cable 2000/384. My NIC is Realtek RTL8139/810x family Fast Ethernal

Not a whole lot of setting to change.

Link Speed/Duplex Mode = 10 Half Mode
Buffer Receive Size = 64K bytes

Does our modem work at 10 Full or 100 Full?

Full duplex will improve throughtput and reduce errors. It prevents packet colisions when NIC is trying to send and recieve at the same time.

Can you increase the buffer?

I am guessing 64 bytes it the max though.

i dont think cable is supposed to be full duplex. i was always told half duplex. half will prevent collisions.

Duplex mode is ISP/hardware dependant.... most cable modems are 10mb half duplex and DSL could be either. If using a router it is capable of 100mb full duplex so that would be the proper settings, as for the other settings look at Optimizing.net and select the "ethernet" link.

what does early tx threshold do? is 63 best setting for cable?

I don't think so. When on half mode your connection can not send and recieve at same time. That is why collisions occur. In full mode you can send and recieve at same time.

I believe what he is refering to is setting it to "auto", setting it to auto can cause data collisions and slow downs, setting it to 10mb half duplex will prevent this (if it's what your ISP/hardware support.... as I stated above.... it should be set to what is supported.

Half, almost all cable ISPs use half. Look on your modem and it should say what it supports.

i had the following default settings for my nic. nic is 3com FastEtherlink 10/100 PCI NIC (3C905B-TX) & there are options to enable or disable in its properties. i wud like 2 know the best nic settings... mine is for dsl

802.1p Support = Diasble <- Available value=enable
Down Poll Rate = 8 <- Available value=64
Flow Control = Enable <- Available value=Disable
Media Type = Hardware <- Available value=10mbps Full,10mbps Half,100mbps Full,100mbps Half duplex
Rx Checksum Offload = Disable <- Available value=Enable
Tx Checksum Offload = Disable <- Available value=Enable

btw, what is Tx Rx options for?

yo steele!!

on my network card theres an option called 802.1p Support and its disabled. should i keep it like that? also on your site it talked about Rx values but on mine its says Rx Checksum Offload and only gives enable/disable options right now both Rx and Tx Checksum Offload are enabled. is that correct?

Sorry I missed it. 802.1p Support is wireless so leave it disabled and yes the other two should be enabled.

my sb4200 has a 100mbps full dup port. Ive been running my nic at that setting since I bought the modem with no problems. Who knows, maybe a new direction for manufacturers

I've read the article on optimizing.net regarding setting up ethernet adapters and have to admit that I still remain confused. In my settings under "early Tx threshold" I have a value of 38 (I don't know what type of value that is). It can go as high as 63 and way down as well. Can someone provide an explanation as there is no manual that came with the NIC adapter and the article constantly refers to "using the manual that came with ...". I know it is PCI and is an Accton EN1207D.

Set the 'Transmit Threshold' option to the lowest possible value where network performance does not suffer from a lack of transmittable data.

It's trial and error, set it as low as you can without any negative effects.
