MTU not optimized?

Post by Arleen »

I am a beginner so please bear with me. Also first time posting, and hoping to get some help. I got to SpeedGuide from PC pitstop, and ran Sguide Tweak98 and PH Webtweak 9x and today I ran the Analyzer Tcp/Ip. I have DSL from Verizon (no PPPoE) and their advertized speed is 768/128. My average speed from Speakeasy is 643/133. I am running Win ME on a 750 with 45G and 384 memory. I have a Linksys Etherfast wireless AP dsl Router. Is this the best speed I can get with my current settings? I checked the registry and the MTU says 1500 but the analyzer says 1476. Compared to dialup I am happy with download speed but the only thing that's slow is when I click on a link on a page the progress bar is slow. Is there a setting that would help that? The results from analyzer below. Any help or advice is much appreciated. Arleen

Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90; VZ_IE5.5; T312461; YComp 5.0.0.0)

TCP options string = 0204059c0103030201010402

MTU = 1476
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings.

MSS = 1436
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1436, which equals MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
505472 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
252736 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
126368 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63184 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 55 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

4342081 connections tested since 03.10.2001.

here's some help

click on this link https://www.speedguide.net/forums/ ... adid=73799

Read all of it. There is info on how to get web pages to load better there as well. Then do another TCP/IP Analyzer test, cut and copy, then someone will help you with settings.

MTU not optimized

Thanks for the quick reply. To change the entries in HKEY_Local_Machine\system\current controlset\services\vxd\MSTCP\Service provider I was unsure exactly what to do. It says 'on the right for all OS's change these entries (All values are HEXIDECIMAL)' but when I right click and select modify the title says Edit Binary Value. For instance, value name/class and this: 0000 08 00 00 00 I'm supposed to enter 1. Is binary value the same as hexidecimal? I didn't want to do it til I checked with you. This is the fix to make pages load faster.

OK first you need to get your MTU straight, it should be 1492 look here on how to fix it or in my Help & Tips link. Then install the NDIS Update and the vtcp 386 update. Then download cablenut from my signature and try the following settings:

BcastNameQueryCount - 1
BcastQueryTimeout - 100
BSDUrgent - 1
CacheTimeout - 600000
DefaultRecvWindow - 31944 or 46464
DefaultTTL - 64
EnableDNS - 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindoSize - 31944 or 46464
KeepAliveInterval - 500
KeepAliveTime - 14400000
Lanabase - 0
LocalCopyMade - 1
MaxConnections - 64
MaxConnectRetries - 5
MaxDataRetries - 99
NameTableSize - 255
NameSrvQueryTimeout - 100
PMTUBlackHoleDetect - 0
PMTUDiscovery - 1
RoutingBufSize - 146432
RoutingPackets - 100
SackOpts - 1
SessionKeepAlive - 7200
SessionTableSize - 255
Size/Small/Medium/Large - 3
Tcp1323Opts - 0
TcpTimedWaitDelay - 30
MaxDupAcks - 2
DefaultTOS - 92
IGMPLevel - 2
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server - 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer - 10

Also do the following:

1. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

2. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link).

3. Clear your temporary internet files.

4. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

5. Download and update then do a scan with Ad Aware.

:) :D

I'm sorry to be so lame but I guess what I wanted to know is exactly how the line should read when I put the '1' in. I don't understand in the right column it says "08 00 00 00" but when I right click to edit it shows "0000 08 00 00 00" How should it read? The next entry is DNSPriority and it shows "d0 07 00 00" On right click it shows "0000 D0 07 00 00 and to the right of that D... " The instructions specify hexidecimal but the edit dialogue box I get says Binary. Where exactly do I put the "1" and which "0's" get deleted? Thanks in advance for your patience with us newbies, Arleen

I have pppoe and get 475/81...I would think you could get much better with regular dsl

I ran the speed test and here are results. Are they about as good as it gets for my Verizon (768/128) DSL (no PPPoE) with Linksys Wireless router or is it not right?
Your download speed:630934 bps or 630 kbps
A 77 KB/sec transfer rate
Your upload speed 134907 bps, or 134 kbps

I didn't install Cablenut because I read that if you installed other tweaks (sguide tweak 98, PH webtweak 9x was installed) it might not be compatible. Also it might be the router that is limiting the MTU regardless of registry settings. What do you think? I have absolutely no idea how fast this thing should or could be (compared to my Dialup it's lightning!) I do know that after installing those tweaks I could finally pass the PC Pitstop test for internet connection. Any advice much appreciated, Arleen (Analyzer below)

The best advice I can give you is what I posted above and you have decided not to try it.
