Can't decide on monitor!

Post by smidley »

Ok guys, I'm havin' a real tough time on deciding what to save up to buy. I can either get an LCD monitor or a CRT....
Now the CRT would be bigger in size, but the LCD would be... well.. an LCD but smaller screen size. I don't wanna spend that much money, but I want a nice setup. How big is gonna be big enough with an LCD monitor?

I heard that LCD monitors look bigger because of the way they are built. I would probably only get a 17" if I get an LCD. (I have a 17" CRT right now) But if I got a new CRT monitor, it would be in the 21" range. I do a lot of everything on my computer... games, internet, media.

HELP ME DECIDE YOU GUYS! :)
Thanx a lot.

Hmmm. I have a 17" flat screen crt and i lub it! Only $179 with a $40 rebate. Not a bad investment. i would've gone with the LCD but i want a 27" and they don't come cheap! For now, i'm very happy with my CRT. Colors are crisp, graphics are awsome and evrything seems to look alot better. Also i saved a ton of money. Maybe wheni get my liquid cooled rig i'll go with the LCD.

what about in games though.... will I really notice that much of a difference in games with an LCD monitor? I plan on buying the NV30 when it comes out.

The second generation LCD's are out this fall....I have been waiting for over a year to get my LCD. The first generation ones were slower in response time, garnering the bad reputation LCD's had for gamers...with that "ghosting" effect. Solarism was pretty much the first and only LCD brand to address speed for gamers last year. But this fall, most LCD makers are putting out higher speed LCD's to start winning over the gaming and professional graphics market. I've been a long time Viewsonic fan....and just a few weeks ago I got the VX800 model, it's 18", you can read the specs on viewsonic's website. Hitatchi also makes a very fast model. I got to try out a lot of LCD's over time at work...and never took one home since they were too slow for me....up til now.

Note in comparing LCD to CRT...you do not compare them in refresh rate or pixel size like you did with CRT's. LCD's are all different. Speed is measured in response time of the pixels. And in contrast.

As far as comparing size...

in CRT...say you have a 17" model....they measure differently....you'll see a 17" model but it's true viewable is only 15.9", or 16.1". A 19" model CRT would have say a 17.6" true viewable. Just something different in how they measure the tube. Plus factor in usually whatever the diagonal measurement is....is also the depth of the monitor...so you lose a lot of desktop real estate.

With LCD's...the size is the true measurement...you buy a 17" LCD...it's truely 17". You get an 18" LCD...it's truely 18". So you can say a 15" LCD is just about the equivelant of a 17" CRT. Or a 17" LCD is just about the equivelant of a 19" CRT. My 18" LCD is just about the same as a 19" or even some 20" CRT's.

Two methods of connecting LCD's...the plain analog video input, and the DVI input. Most video cards are coming with both analog and DVI outputs on them..the DVI has better video quality....so if your video card has DVI out..get a monitor with DVI in. Yes the monitor will cost more..my Viewsonic..the regular model, the VG800 with analog only...costs about 619 dollars. But the VX800...same monitor but with both analog and DVI...cost 840 bucks.

Go for LCD! :D
YeOldeStonedOne is right, they're really good these days.

LCD's give much better quality images than CRT. Get a DVI one else you'll be missing out - if you're gonna spend the bucks, then you might as well spend a little more to get the most out of LCD. I got a samsung dvi and it's fantastic, much better than my old sony trinitron crt.

CRT's a are lot cheaper though and possibly better for games, although not enough for me to get one ever again.

I thinnk what I notice a lot these days is the feeling that I'm looking through a layer of glass using a CRT. With LCD, the image is right there, you only have to look through a thin layer of plastic, resulting in a sharper clearer picture.

Two main factors I see that will always make me choose a CRT over an LCD. Response times for one since I game alot and native resolution is still not up to par for me since I tend to always have my settings at 1600x1200. I know there are a few out there that can accomodate my needs but they are anywhere from 4x-10x the price of a comprable sized CRT.

The bigger ones that they got are nice, but not in terms of 15".
I had a NEC and Samsung 15" side by side comparasion, NEC OWNS the Samsung, but yes, the 18.1" one is really nice. :)

For that kind of money, you're looking at a good 15" or a basic 17".

If you can spend another $100 or so, you'll be able to get a good 17", latest generation, with DVI etc
