New comcast cable internet user, please help!!

Post by Bluesky »

Hi Please lend a helping hand!

I got my cable internet access last Friday from Comcast. The first day was great. The day after, I noticed a big speed drop. I found that if I reset the modem, it'll get fast again for abt a few hours and then die again. (by slow I mean really slow page loads, take a long time to START to load a page, but when the page is loading, I think I can get 10k/s)

Is there something wrong with comcast? or my modem?

Thanks!

I ran so many times of speed test, the average is about 600/90
which is extremely slow.

Any idea?

Thank, Darren

I am not sure if this has anything to do with your problem ... but it might.

WorldCom suffered a major commercial Internet outage beginning at 5 a.m. Thursday, October 4th, according to a company that monitors Internet performance. The problems, believed to be caused by a software glitch, are disrupting service for WorldCom's many corporate customers and may be slowing the Internet down for others, said Tom Ohlsson, vice president of marketing and business development at Matrix NetSystems, based in Austin, Texas. WorldCom, one of the major backbone providers of networks that route traffic over the Internet, did not immediately return a call for comment. As much as 65 percent to 70 percent of the world's Internet traffic runs across WorldCom's network, he said. Telecom operator WorldCom filed for the world's largest corporate bankruptcy after it buckled under a heavy debt load and a massive accounting scandal.

Your modem could be fried, have you had any storms lately? This could also be a line problem, call Comcast and have them come out and check out your line. :) ;)

Found the problem!!!!!

I have tried 4 times and I am convinced that the problem is comming from Kazaa! The peer file sharing software. When I am downloading it's ok, but when I have uploads, the problem starts. I think somehow the firewall from this software just blocks the signal from the cable outlef?

Anyone why?

Thanks

Well.... Your upload speed with cable is capped a lot lower than your download. I would severly restrict the # of people you allow to upload from your machine. See if that helps!

Cheers!

Your download is going to slow down while you are uploading but it should disconnect you. Something we haven't done here is make sure your connection is tweaked properly. If you are using KaZaA you need to get rid of it and use KaZaA Lite (KaZaA is FULL of spyware and can ruin your connection. PLEASE read here and answer the questions at the top and I will help you get everything tweaked properly. :) ;)

This is what I got
SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer
TCP properties for IP = 6x.xx.xx.xxx (pcp823267pcs.nrockv01.md.comcast.net)
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 49 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Is it good enough? and thanks for the Kazzalite advice :) !

WinXP home edition.
I own an Emachine. After I bought it, I know how bad it is. I bought it cuz it was cheap.

XP1800(1.53Ghz), I put in Radeon 9000 128mb DDR. Crappy on board sound card, 4 usb ports. RealTek LAN card.

Thanks Dr. Tweak :)

OK great, first download Cablenut from my signature and try the following settings:

DefaultReceiveWindow = 192512
DefaultSendWindow = 16384
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 100
InitialMediumBufferCount = 240
InitialSmallBufferCount = 320
LargeBufferSize = 81920
MaxFastTransmit = 64000
MediumBufferSize = 15040
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 1280
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 4096
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitsOnReceive = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 37960 or 52560 or 64240
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 2
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1460
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1460
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 37960 or 52560 or 64240
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10
DefaultTTL = 64
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 92

Also do the following:

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there except TCP/IP Internet Protocol.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link).

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with Ad Aware. You need the Refupdater to update Ad Aware.

I love this prog. have you looked at many others?

The first poster mentions his Modem reseting its self. Sounds like some bad line issues. This also could be the "config" of the Modem but i doubt it.
