Question about Sopranos

Just watched this week episode, it was pretty good, but not as good as last weel.

Trying to figure out who exactly is Johnny Sack and Carmine?

I dont understand are they equal to Tony? Are they from another family? Why does Tony have to listen to Johnny? Can either one whack eachother without getting permission?

I haven't watched the show at all, but since everyone raves about it I was going to get season 1 on DVD...then season 2...until I catch up. I thought it would be nice to be able to sit and watch the episodes whenever I want....

last episode very disappointed in, but maybe it is hard to really have every episode be 4 stars..next week looks like it will be awesome, cant wait.
