Setting up a game server behind a Linksys router.

Post by RoundEye »

When it comes to setting up the router should I just use port range forwarding, UPnP forwarding or port triggering?

To be perfectly honest, I'm not certain what the difference is between them and what the benefits are of each type of forwarding.

I believe you'll have to put the server (address) in a DMZ zone.
One of these other guys/gals can be more helpful with forwarding and DMZ's.

I have it working without DMZ, I was just wondering if one of the other methods were more efficient.

The way I understand it is that in order to use port forwarding and the like, you have to know which ports that particular game uses for multiplayer,,,,sometimes a chore.. :( :(

I always use the DMZ zone for the server, but it makes me nervous being exposed..

I play Real War quite a bit with a friend over the net, so if there is a better way???? I am working over a Lynky too.

Port Forwarding....find out which ports your game uses in server mode...forward those ports to the LAN IP of your "server".

DMZ will work in a pinch, but with DMZ....your computer is totally "naked" to the internet...all 65,000 plus ports fully wide open....standing out in front of the routers NAT firewall.

Tis better to find out the ports, and only the ports, you need open for the game service to run....have only a handful of ports open...and those are gaming ports, not dangerous ports to open like you would have included if your DMZ the box.

Years ago, I found that some routers...well, their firmware wasn't so precise...and say you had a range of ports to forward....add one port to each end of the range...to "widen the door" sort of speak. Say you need ports 7777, 7778, 7779, 7780 open....I'd add 7776 and 7781....so on the Linksys....you could do the range 7776 - 7781

You could try starting the game and then run netstat to find which ports are open, you should be able to narrow it down from there.

Haven't heard of that game...took a few looks around the 'net....found one forum where someone posted the question..but no answer:

http://hercules.oc-inc.com:8080/~RealWar/guests

http://207.87.239.232/real-war/forum.asp

http://207.87.239.232/rivalinteractive/realwar.asp

Looks like the game is kinda new....hopefully some site dedicated to the game will have a guide section, or forum, where which ports are needed will be covered.

Thanks YE!! :D

Yeah I know,, I looked.

Real War is an inexpensive game kind of like mix between Sim City and Battle Chess..heh heh. You build up your base,, land,,air and sea assets and mount attacks against your opponent while defending your own base.

Oh well,, looks like netstat to figure out.

You could also use a software firewall. It will ask for permission to let the info through, and should give you the port number it is trying to reach, or be reached.

I use TPF, and it always tells me what port is being accessed. This is kind of a round-about way, since it requires additional software you may not want.
