Well I did it. All you have to do on the TCp.bat is change it to C:\Windows instead of C:\WinNt.

This is mine.

@echo on

copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\tcpip.sys Z:\
copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\afd.sys Z:\
copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\ipnat.sys Z:\
copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\netbt.sys Z:\

net start afd
net start tcpip
net start ipnat
net start netbt
net start dhcp

ipconfig

Path=C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\
zonealarm.exe

Also don't download and use Microsoft's Ramdisk driver. Its ****. Try downloading a free Ramdisk like AR Soft Ramdisk. Do a Google.com search for it and you find a link to download.
pacal74

Yes,it works just follow directions thoroughly

Post by pacal74 »

Im running it on my XP PRo SP1 system just try to follow the directions is the same for XP as for win 2K.make sure ur not changing the letter of the drive and remember that in winxp the path is not copy c:\winnt\system32\drivers\tcpip.sys Z:\ is goto be
copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\tcpip.sys Z:\
like Mohan-san said in UR .cmd or .bat file a simple mistake like that can get confusing.

I used that AR and have my temporary internet files directed to my Z drive but I'm still unclear as to how to place the other things in it such as tcp stuff. Any help would be appreciated.

What's confusing me is that the guide you posted seems to go step by step in setting up the ramdisk. Because I already have the ramdisk set up thanks to the AR software, I need to know where in the guide that I need to go from. Maybe I'm over thinking this but I just want to be sure of what I'm doing here. The AR software doesn't come with any real instructions to work with.

If you have yours ramdisk setup carry on from step 10.

Half way the page look

It says in Bold letters AT THIS POINT YOU MAY WANT TO REBOOT DEPENDANT ON YOUR SKILL LEVEL
After the reboot verify that the drive took.

10.) So before you reboot. You would also have to do some other things. As below now.

below this it says
1.)First you need to edit the TCPIP, and AFD ImagePath entries like this:The \??\
Before the drive letter is crucial. Like in the sample picture.
Note: You will be going to the keys below it is recomended that you also do a
export of both of these keys to the "Ramdisk_bu folder" before making changes.
Name the files AFD_BU and TCP_BU
START RIGHT THERE from step 1 and follow the rest of the directions and make sure U backUp any registry keys u dont want to be stucked without any internet access.
HOPE THIS HELPS if not U can always Unistall the ramdisk U have and do it with the one DSLNuts says

The major difference in setting up a Ramdisk in 2K & XP is the path at which you direct things to, for 2K the path is:

copy c:\windowsnt\System32\DRIVERS\tcpip.sys Z:\

but for XP the path is:

copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\tcpip.sys Z:\

Make the necessary adjustment and it should work fine. :) ;)

I really didn't see a big slow down, maybe a few seconds more but my pc is on 24/7 so it's really not an issue for me. :)

I restarted after installing the ramdisk and I got a startup bluescreen error saying that I have something configured wrong? :( What's up with that? I tried to configure it from control panel but it shows up an error and when I look at my device manager the damdisk is GONE...

Okay, I'm up to step 24 which states "In the window the pops up over that look for the "Group Policy" snap in."

There isn't a "Group Policy" listed but there is a "Local Users and Groups." I assumed that was it so I tried to do Step 25 but I got a message saying:

This computer is running Windows XP Home Edition. This snapin may not be used with that version of Windows. To manage user accounts for this computer, use the User Accounts tool in the Control Panel."

My only option with this was to click ok. What am I doing wrong?

The group policy snap in is only available in XP Pro, you really don't need to do that step anyway, it just make it "nice & neat", it will work fine without the snap in. :) ;)

Yes, if you have already put the tcp.bat command in your startup folder then you should be good to go. :)

Yeah, I put it in the startup, rebooted, pulled it out and edited and placed it in C:/ as stated in the guide. Should I have just left it in startup?

Hmmm, very odd stuff. I uninstalled and installed a few times, each time rebooting to see if it took. The first few times I got nothing, just the same error. Then this last time it booted and it shows up with the temporary internet file still listed in it. I had checked when the Z file wasnt showing to see where the files were being placed and it gave another location.

Another question for you. I'm not seeing any other folders or files in my Z drive other than my temporary internet folder. I would have guessed that something would show for the TCPIP stuff. Why is that?

OK. Do you have Zonealarm? A secondly try running the TCP.bat by double clicking it seeing if it gives you an error message. If not then have a look at your Z drive to see they are there. :)

I don't have zonealarm. The problem looks to be that its still showing as a .txt file and not as a batch file with the gear in the icon.

I resaved it and got it to save as a batch but I'm still not seeing anything in the Z drive other than the temp internet folder.

This is the line in my regedit for Tcpip\ImagePath: System32\DRIVERS\tcpip.sys

I had noticed that this was different than the guide but I figured that the AR software just set it up differently.

Okay, so I'm suppose to change the 4 regedit keys (afd, tcpip, ipnat, netbt) to include the "\??\Z:\" in front of each one?

After doing that and rebooting I continue to lose access to my Z drive. No matter how many times I reboot or reinstall the ramdisk it won't let me use it. If I change my keys back then it will let me in. I'm thinking its the ramdisk software. What is everyone else using for xp?

I finally got it to work. I installed the ramdisk using another software. After I rebooted from making the key changes I noticed that the bat file didn't do its job. I double clicked on it like you mentioned before and it ran and put the four files on the ram disk and my connection started up.

I'm assuming since it put the four files into the ramdisk that its now working like its suppose to. I have to run the batch file each time I reboot. I've run ping tests but the pings seem about the same but the latency does seem to have lowered.
