One word of warning...

Your ISP or his may be watching, and if they see an attempted hack, they MAY cancel your/his service.

Don't ask me, I've never tried it :D

A call to your ISP (and his) about what you intend to do could give you a concrete answer.

I know that when I've allowed certain security sites to scan me for weaknesses, they've had to have some sort of permission in advance to protect themselves.

most cable isp's block netbios due to thee nature of the connection. comcast in DC has for a long time.

you really should check with your isp. what you are doing may actually be illegal in some places

http://www.lawguru.com/ilawlib/ is a decent place to start, but I would start by contacting your isp. They will almost certainly tell you that you will be banned from their service. i don't ever wanntt to go back to dial up again.

Realize that since 9/11 there has been stepped up electronnic surveillance - especially with so many folks predicting cyberterrorism as a new front.

We hired a company to test our security. I wasn't directly involved, but i heard about the exhaustive legal requirements - permission from us, our isp, their isp, etc, before they would even begin.

Most ISPs block Netbios...Could you imagine the horror if they didn't? ("Let's see.. I'll just join "workgroup" and browse the ole nethood)
