New Computer...No Sound and PCI Prob.

Post by christine186 »

I get a new computer, new but it is a HP pentium 3 One Gh with 256 sdram (I think) and I know it has an on board vid card. The problem is that I have no sound at all, even to turn up the volume in programs gives me a blank screen. I tried windows help but it goes blank every time I try to troubleshoot the sound. It's Win98SE. Any ideas? If I open it up will I find a sound card??? What should I look for?

Go to My Computer > Device Manager and see if it lists a sound card and whether or not it has a yellow or red symbol by it.

Can't find sound card in devices but I have yellow question marks for PCI multimedia Audio, PCI communications and PCI Ethernet. Should the sound card be listed under sound, video and game controllers?

You need to find out the brand/model of those three devices and install the latest drivers for them. The problem is that there is either a conflict or the drivers are not installed/corrupted.

Go to HP's website and search for your computer's model number and get the drivers there.

I tried the HP site first. That's why I'm here...I didn't get the HP software disk that should come with a new system, maybe that's why, I don't know, I just figured that if the sound is on board it would be there. I'll see if I can get ahold of the disks because the keyboard doesn't have all the functions it should. It was a really good price but maybe I should have gotten a clone instead. Thanks for the time,

Yep, not even the Bios are for mine. I did the video driver and the keyboard driver and I think it was the modem as well. Nothing else applies to the Pavilion and I'm running Win 98SE...Thanks.

Did you get it locally? Take it back and have em fix it. :) No use for you to have to use all your asprin....let the company take care of it...you should have gotten some kind of warranty with it.

I think it's going back on Tuesday. I got a 10 day take back for cash and a 90 day exchange and a 1 year war on parts and labor. I think that I'll get the 40 Gig with the same ram. The diff is the burner, This has a DVD rom and a slow burner the other has a regular 48x rom/burner. I have 1Ghz and the other is 2Ghz. Same price $699.00. This is a HP the other is a clone.
