What happened to my pictures?

I had about fifty pix on a SmartMedia card and they were all viewable on the camera LCD. I put the card in my SanDisk card reader and opened up MGI Photosuite to find only seven of them. Put the card back in the camera and now I only see the seven.

Any way to recover the rest? Pix of a rare family gathering, river canoeing, sailboat, my son-in-law's POS IROC Camaro, and the biggest, ugliest bug I've ever seen (sort of a desert lobster called a vinegaroo).

Is there any hope? I really want to show you folks the bug.

This is kind of strange. I can read the full card on the computer now but when I put it back in the camera it only shows seven pix.

Make sure you have fresh batteries when you do the transfer! Don't want to lose them that way!

Sony gives a warning about that.
