Do You Believe In God?

Post by axtrader »

Or to say it more precisely...

Do you believe in the existence, past or present, of a Divine Supreme Being or Power?

Hopefully the phrasing of the question will encourage responses from all who refer to the Supreme Being as God, Allah, Jehovah, Jah, Yahweh, Olorun, Olodumare, Ra, Krishna, Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, etc.

Please cast your vote and feel free to add commentary. Just one thing. Let's keep this discussion civil and respect everyone's right to their opinion. Let's not allow what could be an intriguing and inspiring topic to degenerate into some sort of flame-throwing escapade.

TIA for your responses.

Yes, no doubt in my mind.

Being a paranormal research investigator,

whether or not you believe in God, you realize there is something higher going on that we cannot explain.

No I do it part-time as a volunteer, mostly on the weekends.

I have only just begun a few months ago, so I am still learning.

But I just got a night vision scope, and I can tell you it is really exciting to look through it, and actual witness paranormal activity like orbs.

No train wreck...no provocation...no nothing...

If it isn't civil...it goes...that simple. :)

I was here on the first religious thread on SG...it went several pages and several days......

BUT..everyone was civil..

It can be done with a little bit of thinking before you post. Really, it's that simple.
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, and prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children and the children yet unborn and the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.

Intel is better than AMD. :D

I know how to uncap my modem, and have done so, with excellent results. :P

I'm kinda in DeM's boat. I'd like to think there is a greater being out there, but at times is so dang hard to conceive that thought. Ehh, I figure time and experience will help me figure it out.

My answer is yes. Certainly within the scope of how axtrader defined it. But my yes does NOT indicate that I subscribe to any particular religion's dogma. It's more of a personal thing incorporting all I've learned about the concept of faith and existence. I try to keep an open mind to anything persuasive that others may have to offer. I don't think a wise person should close his/her mind to any possibility.

Hybridmonolith's comment doesn't bother me. I don't know why people have to be so sensitive about this. If someone thinks I'm stupid for believing what I do, I'll get over it, no big deal.

Hummm.......

I get called out a lot at night. Sometimes I travel to an area with out much light pollution. I can not look up and deny there isn't something. It's too grand. Ever see the Horsehead Nebula through a telescope?

How can one look at just our world and think that there isn't a grand scheme of things?

Einstein believed in God....when ask about relativity once...
His reply was...

"God does not play dice."

Nothing just happens.....That is my belief..

No, you said its "BS". That bit could and should be left out. Civil is the keyword here. Keep in mind that religion is VERY important to some folks, and comming out and saying its BS, is very hard for some to stomach. That in mind, what purpose does it serve to point out that you think its a complete waste of time? Other than stirring the pot, not much. A reply in the line of..."I do not subscribe to religion, I see no basis for its existence" would have been the same, without a swipe at the folks that do believe religion is important.

Ya gotta watch yerself in threads of this nature, they get sticky and lots of emotions flying about. Diplomacy really.

I'm sure thats true, But it was just opinion. The same thing can be said by both sides and i would not have to stomach somebodies opnion, People can believe what they want. In a discussion everybody states their opinions and thats fine, the fact that your opniions might hurt somebodies feelings, is not a factor. Far as i concerned this conversation is over, I answered the poll. Now it's others turn.. So on with the discusion. ;)

I do believe in God. I liked your post too Downhill....everything happens for a reason.

It is a lot harder to believe than it is not to believe. What harm is there in stretching your mind a bit? There is more to life than what we know. I don't necessarily believe you have to be of one particular religion, but try to live your life right and be good. Help out your fellow man and show tolerance for people. I don't think just going to church once a week and then acting like a jerk the rest of the week is a good thing....there is a lot of people that go to church and then don't practice what they "believe"...while there are other people that never go to church that do. IMO, just have faith and try to be good to eachother

Yes, I believe in God, I have 2 wonderful grandchildren, I see the world thru there eyes and am amazed at things that I once took for granted....A dandylion, that goes from a flower to a puff of seed, that children can see and touch.... A animal that can be loving and protective of the children, The magic of Christmas, when adults can even be civil to one another, and the children believe that anything is possiable, yes I believe in God, for I see miracles every day.....thru the childrens eyes....

And for those of us who believe in multiple Gods and Godesses?

What do we check?

As to expounding, I do believe in multiples of them, and yet only as higher powers who live in more dimensions than we do. We are gods in our own rights to creatures that live in 2D (excluding time), who are gods to 1D creatures, and so on and so forth in both directions.

The mysticism/faith/belief that I hold is more in Nature, Gaia, and Magic(k) than anything else. It makes sense to me that the Earth Mother would care about her kids and let us live.. more than it makes sense that the "Almighty Father" would create us and let us be hurt over and over.

*shrugs* It's all a matter of perspective.

I personally believe in no gods/afterlifes.

I have been told during discussions with older people that as a lot of younger people are Athiest and Older, Religious. But to me it seems that as you get older you have to hope there is more to death than eating dirt otherwise you fall into depression etc etc.

But uhh, no god, no afterlife, no large breasted angels. Dirt and worms...

There is no such thing as god in my opinion. Earth was created by fluke. Not by some supreme being. If there is a supreme being why do we have hurricanes, and not perfect weather all year round, why does no one get sick, or no planes crash.. I'm sure someone who is religious is going to say something from the bible that says where god lets bad stuff happen.. But meh.

Sorry, I had to jump on this.

If "God" is so merciful (as you say), then why doesn't he just utter a word.. say, "home", and then the person he's calling goes *poof* on the streets. No pain, no suffering..

All I know is too much stuff happened to me in Viet Nam (and I came home alive) for there not to be a God. Besides… I promised soooooooooooooooooooo many times (my life) to God to get my sad ass out of there that “my ass belongs to God”.

However… I believe everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. What works for me doesn’t have to work for the other guy (or gal).
