Dsl Speed Good??????
Just got DSL....Sprint Fast Connect/EARTHLINK 1.5 Down/256 up
Using Windows XP.TCP options string = 020405780103030201010402
MTU = 1440
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.
MSS = 1400
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1400, which equals MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 255552
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
515200 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
257600 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
128800 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
64400 (MSS x 46)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10222.08 kbps (1277.76 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4088.832 kbps (511.104 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 47 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
1 connections tested since 03.10.2001.
Analyzer version: 1.01 - updated 05.16.2002.
Speakeasy tests were 924 down/245 up
I know the up speed is pretty good,but should I be getting better Down speeds? If so, what should I do to Tweak it?

yes
Hello,
yes with a 1500 line you should be able to get 1250-1350 out of it wait for lobo/mnosteele or someone to read this they will hook you up with some good settings
if you have TCPOptimizer i would try the folowing RWIN'S
92200
51100
27740
186880
those are a couple that seem to work pretty well
but im not the expert here so sorry everyone if since im not a expert i shouldnt be trying to help

First of all, find out what kinda f**ked up protocol youre using to make your MTU 1440, disable it if you can.
Then use the TCP/IP Optimizer from SpeedGuide to get your MTU up to 1500 like it should be, then set your recieve window to 74060, that is the best rwin for 1.5mbit DSL from what Ive personally tested.
In Cablenut, set your MaxConnectionsPerServer and MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server to 99999, if anyone would like to disgree on that value go ahead, but its very valid to set it to the maximum allowed without windows replying with a crash and error(try using 6 digits
) I mean, come on, all ocers know we always have to push everything to their limit and sometimes beyond.
So try that.........it will push you up a bit

Hmm that doesn't look right. Default recive window 19200? Shouldn't it be 1500 / 8 *1024 = 192000Originally posted by mccoffee
if you have cablenut installed you might want have
default recive window 19200
default send window 32768
the rest of the settings look at monofsteel's help and tips![]()

BTW guys-
If he's using Earthlink DSL, I beleive all their residential products are PPoE, in which case he should use 1492 for his MTU if possible. You can use TCPOptimizer to easily check your MaxMTU, or use DOS ping command.
If you're using XP's native PPoE, you might want to install RASPPoE to bump your MTU from XP's 1480 up to 1492. Bob's site can help you with that:
http://www.carricksolutions.com/raspppoe.htm
I've also found on my Earthlink DSL, that EL's PPoE prefers smaller RWINS. I've found the best success w/ TCP Window Sizes BELOW 63888. . .
Definitely read mnosteele's help page. . .
https://www.speedguide.net/forums/ ... adid=73799
More importantly read, learn, and play with it a bit.

First of all, ASK earthlink before you screw yourself into a mess, then it should be in control pannel, network config(sorry i havent used 9x in a loooooooong time), in XP, its Network Configurations, Network Settings.........then it should say TCP/IP Protocol, etc etc, PPPOE Network Protocol......................then see if theres settings you can modify, or disable it and see if your net conn is still alive
Anyone care to debate setting MaxConnectionsPerServer and MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server to 99999?

Hoss6702 first things first..... let's get your MTU correct. With XP if you are using the PPPoE native software it should be 1480, if you are not using XP's software it should be 1492. There are some fixes in the Help & Tips link in my signature for MTU, try them and see if they help or try the following fix from Bob Carrick:
1) Download this file http://www.carricksolutions.com/XP_MTU.reg
2) Right click the file and choose "Merge"
3) Click "Yes"
4) Go to "Start" -> Click on "Run" -> Type in "Regedt32.exe" -> Click "OK"
5) Go to this Reg Key "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\NdisWan\ Parameters\Protocols\0]"
6) Double click on "Protocol MTU"
7) Click on "Decimal" -> Enter your desired value (I.E.: Anything less then 1480.) Use 1480
8) Click "OK"
9) Done!

Well,I changed it to 1480,but the analyzer still says it's 1440!!!! I don't understand this stuff. I rebooted my modem,and it went back up to 961,but now it's down to 704..........Downloading music is no better than dial up. Guess DSL isn't what I thought it was gonna be. Hell,my DirecPc was a hell of alot faster than this!
Can someone maybe post all the settings I should use for Cablenut? I get confused when it says to use the caculator for certain entries. I have ppoe 1.5 down/ 256 up.......please help!

For Cablenut try the following:
DefaultReceiveWindow = 192512
DefaultSendWindow = 32768
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 100
InitialMediumBufferCount = 240
InitialSmallBufferCount = 320
LargeBufferSize = 81920
MaxFastTransmit = 64000
MediumBufferSize = 15040
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 1280
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 4096
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitsOnReceive = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 31680 or 48960 or 63360*
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 2
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1440
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1440
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0

MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 40
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 20
DefaultTTL = 64
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 92
* These values are supposed to be even multiples of your MSS which is 40 less than your MTU. If your MTU is still 1440 then adjust these values accordingly, I figured them on a MTU of 1480.

I think I really messed up the Registry.....I can't get over 612!!!!! No matter what. I tried putting back the registry to it's original state, but when I go in to check it to see if anything has changed,it's still set at all the tweak settings.....Guess I'll have to reformat to get it back...........

Its an improvement, but you should get much more speeds if your on a 1.5mbps connection. You should aim for 90% of your caps,I can get about 93% of my caps.
Have you thought of a complete reformat?

Did you install Earthlink's software, or were you with another provider who had software you installed? If so, delete any of this from your system, and let XP set up the connection thru the Internet Connection Wizard.
On the speed side, I'm wondering if you have filters on all your other phone line devices? Are you having any synch problems with the DSL modem? Do you have any other Protocols installed under Network Control Panel (right click on your connection icon and select 'Properties'. You should only need TCP/IP (and your NIC) for a standalone on DSL.

No I don't have any software installed. As a matter of fact, I had to call tech support and manually install all the addresses. I think I'm gonna just do a full format and see how it goes. I don't have any filters either. How many protocals should I have? I'm at work right now,so I don't know what I have .....
It could also be another problem: Distance. DSL, unlike cable which is per-block, DSL is per-user. The farther you are away from their server, the slower your connection is, because it takes longer to send and recieve packets and also the connection dies after 30 miles.
I wish I wouldve found this out before I signed up with Verizon, cuz they're 18mi away from me and I'm not getting all of the bandwidth advertised.
Call Earthlink, ask them where you are served from, and see if you can get switched to somewhere closer. Either by switching providers or by having your DSL modem dial-up to a different location(yes, DSL modems dial-up, once you plug them in, they intalize once and then are permanently connected).

Sorry about protocols . . .was in front of my 98 machine at work when I wrote that one. Right click on your connection icon on task bar & select 'Status'. Select 'Properties'. Your NIC should be listed at the top. Below, the only thing a stand alone DSL machine needs is TCP/IP. If you see QOS, don't worry about it right now. Also, Client for Microsoft Windows is probably there. Anything else can be removed.
In IE, go to Tools, internet options, connection tab at top, LAN settings at bottom, nothing should be checked in this box.
In cablenut, delete the values in ALL boxes (make them all blank), and SAVE TO REGISTRY. Now reboot. This should remove any tweaks you have made. Also uninstall any other speed tweaks you have made.
Take a look at this page on Bob Carrick's site as well:

Just wanna say thanks to all of you folks who helped this Newbie out! At least I know where to look for help in the future. Thanks again all!!!!!!!!!
