XP Sp1 Beta Build 1089 Tweakin'

Post by DesertFox »

I installed the XP Service Pack Build 1089 on XP Pro yesterday, and have a few tweakin questions.

First, before I had done a little bit of tweaking my start button; changing the test to say "What!" without the quotes, and making the color a nice light blue.

Naturally, the Service Pack re-wrote explorer.exe and I lost the changes I had made. I went and did the same thing I had done for the non service pack installation, and yet now the tweaks have no effect.

First, the text.

To remove windows file protection on explorer.exe, i did this:

run "%systemroot%\system32\Restore"
go to tools, folder options, view and uncheck hide protected operating system files (recommended) as well as make sure that show all files bubble is selected and uncheck hide extensions for unkown file types.

in the %systemroot%\system32\Restore folder, there is a file called filelist.xml

i removed read only, and opened it with notepad
above the line

%windir%\system.ini

i added

<REC>%systemroot%\explorer.exe</REC>

and this excludes explorer from system file protection (at least it did pre sp1).

Using resource hacker, i opened explorer.exe and under

String Table -> 37 -> 1033

i changed the "start" to "what!"

however, i couldn't save, so i ended explorer and redid this, and it saved, but no change - however, this did work with pre sp1

Next, to change the color of the button using reshack I opened
c:\windows\resources\themes\luna\luna.msstyles

I opened bitmaps, and scrolled all the way down to metallic_startbutton_bmp and changed the startmenu bitmap from the original to the one i had made, (which worked in pre sp1).

Anyway, I was wondering how to do these things now, so if any of you have had these same probs, and have fixed them, please let me know

or u can go here and download the program to change ur START into whatever u desire. But 1 problem though. It won't stay there forever. It changes back to the START button after awhile.

Have fun with it. :)

the overclockersclub tutorial is the one i used. like i said, it doesn't work in sp1, but i would like to use resourcehacker to change it, not a prog designed for it like windows blinds - conserve resources and all ya know.

DesertFox:

Build 1090 is out. Personally, I'm waiting a few weeks after the final release is out.
