Fluctuating Pings in online games driving me nuts

Post by HeadRusch »

Up until a few weeks ago my online connection speeds as far as GAMES were concerned were great.

As an example, playing DAY OF DEFEAT online using the Half Life server browser built into the game, I'd routinely connect to games and my ping times would normally fluctuate between the 30's and the 100's or so...............at least they'd stay pretty consistant.....and I'd say I averaged 70 or so.

However now, and this has been happening for a few weeks, I'm having a real bitch of a time even finding a game to CONNECT TO. My "ping" times are all up the 200+ range on all but a FEW servers.

But its not consistant. Sometimes I'll connect to a game that shows I have great bandwidth, I'll log on, and suddenly my pings are in the 400's and remain there.....as though it was reported wrong. Then I'll use a "real" game browsing tool like GameSpy and it will show 500+ servers, but NONE with a ping time to me less than, say 150 or so..........help, whats happened!?!?

Other times I'll see my pings spike up to 300 or 500 or 800.....
sometimes higher.......sometimes theyc ome back down, sometimes not.

Now......let me tell you.......I've run the speed analyzer and have my system configured back to "SPEC" for a Cable/DSL connection and its as fast as I think my ATTBI capped account is going to get.
(170K downloads are back).

But here's the deal..........I foolishly installed Mcafee Online Virusscan.......do you think that has anything to do with it?
I can't say for sure the problem was here before or after I installed this, but its 'right around the same time'.

I'm prepared to uninstall it and say to hell with the $30 bucks I paid to get it............

But is there a setting I could check, or something I could specifically compain to the cable company about? I mean, the bandwidth speeds seem ok...but......the ping times are sucking in games....help? :(
