How do i network 3 computers?

Post by cy »

How do i network 3 computers by just using network cards and crossover cables? Using ICS or manually setting. :)

Edit: Or can this even be done?

I dunno if this will work ... but it will require 5 network cards.

#1 Computer is the computer with the internet connection
#2,#3 are the other computers

Computer #1 will need two network cards. One will plug into the cable modem, and one will connect to computer #2.

Computer #2 will need 2 nics as well. THe cable comming from comp #1 will plug into one nic, and run another cable out the other nic to computer #3.

Then somehow use ICS ... this is just an idea .. and i have NO clue if it will even work!

Looks like this:

I'm fairly certain you can only network 2 computers without a hub/router/switch but i stand to be corrected by the networking gurus. If cost is the major drawback then get a cheap 4 port hub.

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is available from OS's above and including W98SE.
The three systems here (one a laptop) are connected through a hub and network card installed in the box acting as server. The other two connect through the hub and all have access.

1) I have 3 network cards in my host computer, then 1 network card in each clients.
2) Then run ICS, host running ME and it has a little icon on the taskbar.
3) Right click the icon, go to option.
4) Set "Incomming connection" as the netword card that your cable modem coming in
5) Set "Primary network card" as one of the other network card
6) Set "Secondary network card" as the other one
7) Connect the other 2 computer to the network cards on host using crossover cable
8) Restart all 3 computer, let the host boot up first, then turn on the other 2.

Just buy a hub, 3 network cards, and CAT5 cable, which will be very easy to set up.. then download the proxy software from analogx.com, and run that on the computer with the internet connection, and set up the other computers on the network to use a proxy via internet explorer connection setttings.. easy and cheap :D

FWIW, it would be far easier (and more reliable) to use a dedicated hub or access point. I guess you have money to shell out for a handful of computers and network cards, but not for just one hub?

I see that I can get an 8-port 10/100 switch at newegg.com for $29.

Daisy-chaining computers off of one another is a messy proposition. You can probably brush your teeth with an industrial floor sander...but I wouldn't recommend that, either.
