Play Windows Games on Linux?

I know I heard about a populoar program that would let you play Windows Games on Linux. I was wondering how the performance was. I know that it probably has to be slower since its emulation but is it still playable? I would like to use linux but the only thing stopping me is my love for games, and I don't want to duel boot. Let me know and maybe point me to an article if you can, thanks!
