Cable going slow? Try this...

Post by JeffL »

Well I was having cable troubles, I have 2000/384 by Earthlink thru Time Warner.

Anyway, my speed was consistently below 300kbps.

Seeing as how theres something like 8 tvs in my house I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to check the splitters.

Well sure enough the cable line to the cable modem (which is brand new BTW) was connected via a spliter before the amplifier.

I just switched a TV connection from the amp to the unamped splitter and the cable modem line to the amp.

So far my speed avgs. 1700kbps now and my ping is lower :D

I emailed my ISP but they are 2 SLOW!

Anyway, maybe this will help someone...

Hi JeffL ,

What is this amplifier thing u mention? Do u have a picutres or a site of it? i have 4 tvs in 3 rooms and one in the living room. They all use splitters to the main cable. Is there anyway u can show us (me) the sample pix ? sorry my english r bad .. some of the meanings r hard for me to understand. :D

Yeah, its just a general cable amplifier. You can get one at RadioShack, or your cable co. might be generous enough to give you one, I know mine did, they isntalled it when we moved in :)

Ill take some pics of the amp if u want and post em here in a few.

An amplifier can and most likely will mess up your cable modem frequencies. You should split your cable where it comes into your house with a 2 way splitter one side going directly to your cable modem and the other to the rest of the house for tv signal (you should put the amplifier on the side that goes to all the tvs not the cable modem side). :) ;)

Thats how it was, but I think the speed improved with the cable on the amp...

Maybe my cable is just being screwey with me, but Ill switch the cable and the TV again and see what happens...

The splitter is supposed to regulate the signal to the modem, if not call ISP for another splitter :)

Since switching cablemodem off the splitter I get http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests/18 ... 1026843456

But I switched the cable from the amp 20 mins ago and didn't test right away :(

Anywho my speeds back up :D

Don't, as I said above the amplifier can and most likely will mess up you frequencies. But by all means get a good quality splitter and make sure your f-connectors are secure and put on properly. :D :)
