Cable interruption problems

Post by impulse3k »

Recently I've been getting my connection interrupted... the lights will stay on but I can't access sites or do anything. To fix it I have to disable my connection, reboot the modem and then enable the connection again. I can stay on from 1min to a few hours... its pretty random. Anyone have any ideas what the problem might be, or any instructions to see what the problem is? Thanks in advance

[Edit] Editing to say I have WinXP, Surfboard SB4100 modem, and am an ATTBI customer.

Not sure off hand what's causing it but next time try and go to a command prompt (start - run) and type - ipconfig /renew. :)

Is your computer configured to use DHCP to obtain an IP address?

Thanks,

mnosteele52, it gives me an error saying it can't renew IP address.

And yes it is configured to use DHCP to obtain an IP adress... Any other suggestions?

ARGH!!!
I'm having this exact same problem, with At&t.
Here are some tidbits that could be useful:

- I have both win98 and 2000 (dual boot), and it happens with both
- When it stops working, the "PC Link" LED on my RCA modem is still lit
- This started when I got my shiny new computer, and I'm using the same NIC and modem, and I'm in the same location, using the same cable

This is driving me absolutely insane, but it's really nice to know that this isn't just happening to me!

Help!

I had the same thing happen to me. They told me they were reassigning IP blocks or something like that in my area and that it would come back on shortly. It would happen at completely random times, but usually late at night, could this be the same case? Try going to just www and see if anything comes up. I was able to look at a bunch of their NOC's test files confirming that I did have access to the network, just my IP wasn't valid yet.

Hm, I just discovered something interesting.
When the connection drops, it will start working again when I release and renew my IP in winipcfg. Any idea what this means?

EDIT:
one more thing... I can't just renew, as said above. I have to release it first.

I'm getting this problem too, I called an actual semi-bright IT guy from my ISP and they noticed (after a lot of arguing) that my whole LAN (area, neighbors), are having the same problem with their modems. They are coming tomarrow to fix the problem - hopefully.

Unless anyone else knows what it could be...

Good to know, good to know.
So, basicaly, I'm going to have a tech come out, huh? Grr, I was hoping I could fix this on my own.

Yeah, they fixed a corroded end of my main cable line (which was black and rusted to hell) which fixed my problem A LOT. Although I'm going to make an appointment to get my whole main line replaced (which is what the IT guys said, since its really really really old).

Online gaming is a bit laggish still, but I think getting that main line replaced (outside of my house) will fix it for good. I hope this helps any of you guys.

Thats the problem im having now, I have two computers hooked up to a hub and everynow and than my internet just stops, it doesnt work. So I usually restart my modem and it does. I called my ISP and their technicians didnt know what was wrong. I replaced 2 of the 3 network cables because they told me that the ones I was using could be damaged, and yet still the problem continues. Im gonna replace the network cable between the hub and the modem and if that doesnt work ill just replace my hub to see if that is the problem or ill get a router. This problem has begun to occur more with this new modem my ISP gave me (Blue Terayon). I had less disconnects with my old gray LAN City modem.

Yeah, they told me to replace the cat 5 too. But I only have to renew / release my IP. I really don't want to pay the $50 to have them come out to my house.

Oh, one more tidbit of info - this started occuring only with my new comp. It didn't happen with my old one, but there was a delay of about 2 weeks where there was no computer.

Really starting to piss me off...

Same thing here. I'm on Adelphia powerlink services down here in West Palm Beach area and it's been driving me crazy. About 3 weeks ago the modem completely lost singal for 3 hours and finally came back on. Ever since that night I keep losing net connections. Modem never loses it's cable singal or any of the modem lights go off so not sure what is going on.

When I play my games I know the game servers are receiving my character movement instructions but nothing is coming back to me to see the updates.

A tech is coming out monday to inspect the lines outside the apt so maybe they'll find something and fix it.

I have a Motorola SB4100 hooked to a Linksys 4 port router with a 3Com NIC card. My second computer is doing the same thing so I know it's not my computer. Just something the way the singal behaves outside the apt that's affecting my service. Maybe they're having problems with the routers at the endhead. Whatever it is I would like it fixed.

For WIN 2000 and XP machines. Make sure the DNS client is STOPPED and set to MANUAL.

what do u mean? do u mean instead of having it look up the dns servers i should tell it what the addresses for the dns servers are? or could the problem be a faulty cable modem or something like that?

Here is the original thread I started a long time ago. It may not be the fix for you but it is worth trying.

Seems like this is a fairly common problem. I'm seeing a lot of posts about it.

That solution sounds promising. I just need to know how to do it in 98 as well.

well that fix doesn't appeared to have worked... guess i get to call up tech support then :( ugh.... oh well, hopefully they'll send someone out or something and find some problem on their end cause this is making gaming rather difficult.

Yup, that's the only solution the "senior" tech support could come up with. Grr.

Its too soon to tell, but this morning, I installed a new NIC, and the problem has not yet returned! I'll post again if I was wrong, but if I'm not, this is a very good thing to know!

Worth a shot, at least.

cable interruption problems

Post by bnormal »

I too have had the same problem. I am using RR service, Motorola SB4200 modem, integrated nic and xp home. I've had the local cable company out to my house 3 times. They were not able to diagnose what was causing my disconnects. I had to turn off my system, unplug the modem, wait 15 seconds and plug the modem back in and turn on the system.

I noticed that whenever I was disconnected that in "Network Connections" the 1394 Connection didn't appear. So as a last ditch effort to figure out what the problem was I "disabled" the 1394 Net Adapter in device manager.

That was a week ago and I've not been disconnected since.

Pure coincidence? Don't know...
