Trying to setup a network in my home

Post by Bigpoppapump »

I have XP on my machine and have been running cable for the last 3 years. I just slapped together another pc using 98. I bought a cable/dsl router and for some reason my XP machine cannot connect but the 98 machine can. Ive switched cables around and even tried each port but XP cant connect.

Do you have to configure something with XP or what?
Any help is appreciated. Thanx.

Try this, go to run then type CMD and in the dos window type "ipconfig /release". close that window and go to tcp/ip config window and set everything static. ipaddress 192.168.0.100, subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.0.1, set your dns to whatever your dns server are.

I just swapped the nics from each machine and now my XP machine can connect but 98 cannot.

The "bad" nic in my case is a DLink DFE-530TX+
Its not a bad card. Been using it for almost 8 months.

I guess I should go buy another nic and try it.

The DHCP server in some of the home gateways (Linksys, NetGear, etc.) can have problems with certain NICs. I've run into it mostly with Realtek based NICs, but have even seen it happen a couple times with 3Com's. Simply would not pick up an IP from the router, no matter what. Slap in an Intel- and away they went. Go figure.
