Which router to buy?

Post by Wormeyer »

I am just getting hooked up to AT&T broadband and am looking for some safety as well as flexibility if I want to connect other computers. I am looking at the ZyXel Prestige 310 and the Linksis EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch (Model BEFSR41). Which, if either would you suggest and why? Thank you.

The ZyXel Prestige 310 sell for about $200 and the linksys for about $79 If you want a router you should look at netgear or nexland .

Netgear is just putting out a new series of routers for home and small office use. The router is the Netgear RP614. Here's a link:

http://www.netgear.com/product_view.asp ... 12&zrp=131

Buy.com has it for around $70 and the Linksys model you noted for around $75. The Linksys can be had for less through Pricewatch.com -- both have 4 port switches included.

Zyzel builds good products, too. I own one of their DSL modems.

I think the bottom line here is that reviews I've read indicate there isn't much performance difference between a lot of these units while the price differences can really vary. Translation: spending more money won't buy you a better router for your home purposes.

Linksys has the lion's share of the market because their routers are dead easy to set up. Having said that, the new Netgear router cited above is right in that pricerange.

Either one will do the job for you.

ZyXel is pretty much the same as a NetGear...near identicle twins, 99% same hardware under the hood. Faster and more stable than the Linksys, although over the past year Linksys newer firmware has raised their reliability quite a bit...plus like others say, the Linksys is incredibly easy to setup and configure.

NetGear and Linksys make the only routers I really like designed and marketed for the home market...the "under the hundred dollar club". For higher performance, and a bit more money for the home user (160 bucks), the Nexland ISB SOHO is very fast and quite stable.

I agree with Yeolde, Since I have gotten my Nexland setup right, it has been running like a champ! I was about to give up, but held in there.
