I'm seeing taht some people need to reactivate XP for whatever reason. They call and MS says no, you've done it too many times or whatever. WHY DON'T YOU WRITE DOWN THE CODE THEY GIVE YOU ON THE PHONE? That way if you need to reactivate, you just enter the code you had before. Wouldn't this work?

Yes it will if it is the same pc and you have not changed any hardware since you last activated. There is a grey area because you can make some minnor hardware changes without haveing to reactvate, but if you make changes and reinstall XP the number from Microsoft will be different from before. It's based on your pc hardware and your product code.

Yeah, and Microsofts idiotic activation is why so many blackmarket copies are out there.

This would not be a possible solution.

Everytime you tell Windows that you want to activate by phone, it creates a new hash that you read off. It does this every time that you load the activation wizard.

Is the hash different each time, even if you don't change anything in the PC? From what I have read it's not supposed to change and you could just type it in again. Not that every thing you read on the net is correct, especially if it's from Microsoft. Hey this is Microsoft software, how often is it going to crash? LOL You won't need to activate very often, but if you do it to many times, well let's just say they won't let you. :(

Well, I do believe that the hash is different. The hash will change when you tell the computer that you want to activate by phone, then cancel when it gives you the hash and try the activation process again. At least the hash changed for me. ;)

You now the irony here is the general user with legit software is forced to look for a way to cheat the activation. Just because his or her machine crashed a few times of they decided to upgrade a couple of times and microsoft decided they musy have tried to install on more than one machine and reject them. How do the people who do hardware reviews for magazines cope with that. They must be useing the corporite edition.

I don't use XP but I've read about WPA and I know there are a number of work-arounds for this. Try doing a google search and I'll bet you come up with something.
