After listening to something like NWA (or anything similar), how can anybody take the "power" of the N word seriously? Besides, the power of a derision is in the eye of the beholder, right? It's not like you can objectively prove that one term is worse than another. Yet we have to live as if it's been etched into law - and only certain groups get to make the laws. How about the racism and blatant anti-european lying discussed in the article BJS posted. The stuff in there makes me just as angry as any N word could make anybody. Like the article said, reverse the targets of the slanders and lies and see what you get. I think that would be fun as hell actually. Maybe people will start to think about what they say if they consistently get back what they dish out.Originally posted by Deus ex Machina
The over-sensitivity you describe might be attributed to the power of the derisions used as well as the history of the targeted group. There is no "standard" per se. Is there a word for Europeans that cut as deeply as Nigg*r? A symbol as detestable as the Swastika for Christians?

You said it, the power of the word CHANGES as it touches different groups. A black dude can call his other black friend n*gger, but a white fella prolly should not(if he values his teeth). Two lawyer in thier country club can make WASP jokes, but the Asian bus-boy better keep his trap shut, unless he likes the unemployment line. Its a case of comfort zones.Originally posted by torsten

I'va admitted before that I'm racist, not by choice and I'm workin hard to smother the embers of it, so my viewpoints are not necessarily the norm. I see color/race, thats a fact. The neural pathways burned into my brain register certian sterotypes, not much I can do about that. What I can do is modify my outward behavior to negate the though process. In doing that I'm hyper-senstive to the PC bullsh!t. I detest it, its almost, no it is, racism comming full circle. Not one bit different than saying "hey, yer a dirty n*gger", than saying "african american" IMO. Its a person for godsakes, nothing more, nothing less. The only time the color/race should be a consideration, is when looking for someone, medical tests, or any kinda database that requires that physical apperance be noted. Otherwise, the only check box on a form should have is "human" or "alien"(outerspace that is).
Ramblin on...sorry.

It was all about Asians like one shirt had two men with slanted eyes wearing triangular hats. The slogan: "Wong Brothers Laundry Service: Two Wongs can make it white." What the hell is that? Some of you guys might not care but I do. I'm Asian and I find that offensive.

Re: My comments on this
dude I fully understand your point well off...I understand that from your point of view its wrong....but I dont sit here and fly off the handle about every friggin thing thats said about white people.....hell rap talked about white people...and I wasnt out there protesting crap about nothing. I just think that yes where as you cant go too far with becoming racist...I dont see where that shirt would hurt anyone of asian decent to the point of protesting.....look around the stores and find how many redneck t-shirts there are....now...are WE protesting that? are we?Originally posted by terrancelam
to XseanX, F U!! Do you know why people of ethic minority make fun of people of caucasian decent? Do you? Granted the majority of people (like 90%) of caucasians don't deserve that kind of treatment, given the past history of what "caucasians" have done to people of visable ethic minorities, it's given they will harbor some hostile resentment towards the "white man". The "white man" forced African natives into slavery and killed and raped whole tribes, why? Because they could. The "white man" lured people from china to Canda to work on the rail roads so that trains could travel from east to west. What did they get for it? A cheap burial under the railroad tracks. Given the track record, it's not even laughable. And saying that your proud that a company should have the right to stereo type all people with "slanty eyes" as being laundry cleaners is a fricken disgrace to liberal democracy and also the achievements of freedom in this century. Sure some asian people operate "Dry Cleaner" operations, but do you know why they do it historically? Because NO OTHER JOBS WERE OFFERED TO THEM IN THE PAST IN AMERICA OR CANADA. God bless racism at it's best. As well as ignorance.
Saying that do a good job? Saying they do a good job IS A FRICKEN SLAP IN THE FACE! Would you like it if I said "Hey there WHITE INDIVIDUAL MALE! You are doing a good job at being dumb as **** and still getting the job over a person of visable minority!" Do you think that would make a good shirt, because that is EXACTLY what the AF shirt is.
And it's not that people are complaining about just a t-shirt. It's the whole generalization and stereo typing of a minority which is plain retarded! What kind of a civilized nation lets something like that happen?
As for people cutting infront of you and saying racist crap like that, stand up for yourself. Don't like incidents with stupid retarded individuals without a sense of society get in the way of your life. Just be smart about it and raise awareness of the situation. These people are protesting to try and raise awareness of the situation. Just because people of my ethinicity in the past suffered because of your, doesn't give me the right to step all over you. But it sure as hell doesn't give you the right to come and classify me and make generalizations about my ethinic minority. It's a little legal thing called slander.
WTF is PC? DO you even know? PC is something politicians are worried about, not high school kids. But do you know what respect is? Do you know what respect for your fellow citizen is? Jesus.
and to say that "given the past history of what "caucasians" have done to people of visable ethic minorities, it's given they will harbor some hostile resentment towards the "white man". " is total bull...because it was just not the white man that did this...AFRICANS sold their OWN race to the whites and into slavery...asians had poor people that were used as slaves....as did the white people...that was the way back then...and it wasnt just a color thing. what you seem to have over looked is the fact that africans werent bought to be slaves because of their color. yes it was a different race..and no Im not going to say that in that time there werent a lot of those that didnt believe in some way that africans were animalistic....but the fact was that we did BUSINESS with other africans...and it was cheap labor for a one deal price...it would be the same as selling crops....it was a good investment back in those days....was it right? no..should it have happened? no....buyt Im not going to sit here and be persecuted for something I didnt even do.
Im not racist...but that shirt I dont find to be racist...IVe seen a lot worse...and thats what Im saying. yes I understand your asian and that it affects you because its stereotyping but you have to realize you arent the FIRST RACE TO BE STEREOTYPED...everyone is stereotyped...thats just one example of it.
as others said..IVe learned to look past it...and yes I do stand up for myself as you so often tell me to do...but I find it that now...after all that has gone on....it seems like the whites have been told you cant say anything about anybody other than your white folk...but all the other races can say whatever they want about white people...its a double standard..
yes white people enslaved white people black people etc. but the more MATURE generations have done all they can to correct mistakes that were left to them in a legacy. we were left with the burdens that our fore fathers decided to give to us...and weve stepped up to the plate and taken the responsibility to restore what was once destroyed.
and you say how asians were given those poor dimeaning jobs that didnt pay well etc etc....umm..dude...it was like that for EVERYONE who came to america during that time...why not study what happened to the irish when coming here in the 1900s and how about the italians and others that came here. it was hard for EVERYONE to start off...not just asians and blacks. yes this was a free country and you were allowed to come here...but unfortunately everyone who came here had to start all over again with nothing....and the jobs they got were only a first step.
look at the asian race now. or the blacks. or the whites. we all have our poor and our very very rich...and as a matter of fact most of my asian friends are hella rich...or atleast better off than I am....so whos laughing now? we need to stop looking at it as a minority majority thing and start looking at it as a whole.
and also start looking at the shirt for what it is....a harmless joke. take it as a joke at the past or a political cartoon...but dont let it hit you deep....learn to let the little stuff go..I have...just remember...where laundry services were once crappy jobs...they are now very profitable businesses...and Im sure any asian launderer would just laugh that one off while driving his mercedes home from the dealership. I know the guy at my dry cleaners...he drives an M3 and has a business and beach home down at the beach as well...he gets as many days off as he wants and runs his own life.
I wasnt trying to put off the fact that the shirt hurts you...only getting you to recognize that everyone has the same problem..and I think this is the least of the problems...hell if you cant laugh at yourself, then who can ya laugh at? I probably laugh harder at jokes making fun of white people than anything else. but hey people are different.
we understand that the shirt is offensive and how it makes you feel...we are not trying to tell you that you shouldnt be offended...only that you should learn to let the small stuff go..and learn to take up the big problems...that was a joke...Im sure a lot worse could have been said...am I wrong? just think about it like this. A&F just pissed off a whole bunch of people...and lost a lot of business so whos the jackass now? never know..they might end up with the A&F laundry service
