RWIN Suggestions *Attn Lobo*

Post by HenryHand1 »

I just switched ISPs and I have my settings tweaked, but I would like suggestions from other ppl to get the most out of my connection.

I'm on comcast cable and capped at 1.5mbps down and 150up . My ping is very good... usually between 25-35ms and sometimes 20 or below at night. My important system settings are as follows:

800MHz Pentium III
512MB RAM
Windows XP

I've played around with the RWIN alot and found that as small as it looks, 7300 works the best because with higher RWINs I start to loose many packets.

Here is a speed test I did: Speed Test

All my settings look good in SG TCP/IP Analyzer. I'm getting around the speeds I should but, ofcourse, I want the most I can get out of this connection and would appreciate any suggestions from Lobo and/or other RWIN experts.

Thx for your help..

Well first off, I don't pay any attention to DSLR tests, stay their and take test after test, different results, they started out as DSL site and to get the Cable crowd they have enticed a few, packet retransmissions are not packet loss:

It don't get any higher up the food chain than this:

ALL recommended RWIN values are under 1MB, so there is no way they would affect the PC performance.

Any usable CPU / RAM combination should be able to handle high-speed traffic, however slower computers overloaded with a lot of running applications tend to have slower transfers by default... Simply because there are not enough resources left to fully exploit the potential of the Netwrk card, Winsock and so on.

Still, higher RWIN is better in all cases. The only exception is that when you go above 65535, the header gets a bit bigger, so there might be a slight performance drop just above a RWIN of 65535

If there is high packet loss or latency on the line, higher RWIN is still better, simply because you have the potential of higher throughput...

Just my 2c.

I would try 522680, 524176 or 531440, your not going to have speed with what you have now, Home Edition comes with RWIN 64240, try that too, Pro Edition I believe RWIN 1752:)

I'll say it again -
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE People, IGNORE the BS "tweak test" from DSLReports. This test is based PURELY on internet traffic and congestion - NOTHING ELSE, you can take this test back to back to back and get COMPLETELY different results. Just to a speed test from Speakeasy and use that and other SPEED tests to see if you are getting close to your caps - THAT is what is important (SPEED).
Try RWIN's of 52560/64240/96360/128480/175200/256960, your speed looks good now but try a large ftp file and see how it is. :) :D ;)

Tweak Test?

Post by HenryHand1 »

That was the speed test results from Speakeasy. The results come out on a DSLR page. And nowhere in my post did I mention the tweak test at all.... i noticed the packet loss actually from dos. I will try those suggestions.

Stuck @ 65535

Post by HenryHand1 »

I am not using any proxies that i'm aware of... but for whatever reason my RWIN wont go over 65535.. any idea why? Could this be because of the transparent comcast proxy server I've been hearing about?

There are only 2 reasons why RWIN in XP will not go above 65535:

1= Warez copy prevents it on some

2- Tcp1323 needs to be set to 1 :) :)

ok, all of those RWINs seem to improve my download speed when I'm downloading large files, and there is no packet loss at all. If they're all about the same, should I choose the largest one?
