Networking with AOL computer

Post by JustTweakin »

OK, thois one has me stumped... I'm trying to set up remote assistants for a budy of mine that I'm building a computer for out of state. He has an AOL Dial up account (#1 problem) and I am on Cable. Both Machines are running WinXP. How do I setup a remote session with his computer. I thought about using Norton's pcAnyware but how would I configure this. Right now, i am testing his AOL dial up from my house. Will his IP address change when we dial up in his state. I guess the big thing is I need to help fix problems that he may have, and I need to see the screen and use my keyboard to do it. I don't know much about remote assistant in XP, but have used Stac Reachout all the time at the office. Any clues to why things I try aren't working with AOL dial up? I get a connection bo no screen appears. Also can't setup a VPN with his IP address. I'm not a an online gamer so my experience is limited to LANs. Any help here would be appreciated.

His dial up will get a different IP address every time he logs on...it's dynamic.

I'm not sure what AOL filters out when their clients dial up, but you could have him launch PcAnywhere host in TCP/IP mode once he is connected....hopefully he has two phone lines so he can run WINIPCFG, then call you and tell you his AOL dial up's WAN IP address, or if one phone line, he can e-mail it to you. Then you can launch your PcAnywhere remote in TCP/IP.
