Disable Automatically reboot in Startup and Recovery, so you will be able to see the blue screen.

Also check the Event Viewer, you may be able to get some idea of what's causing the problem.

Disable the DMA mode in the CD rom drive , go to control panel \system \ Cd rom drives \properties \ check boxes DMA - uncheck it .

Tha damn VIA boards haves most of the times hik-up with the DMA modes of the CD drives .
My computer is my pride, so be careful with your comments about it !!

I havent spent much time with Windows xp, but make sure your drive is on the HCL. If its not, you found your problem. Thats all i can suggest as i don't use xp

The fact that the software loads in safe mode points to a driver problem. For Ultra DMA to work properly the drivers for your mother board need to be installed and the DMA setting for your CD rom and hard drive need to be selected. Normally these will be selected by default if the drivers are installed. Unselecting these setings will dramatically slow down your CD rom drives.
I have a MSI MB with a VIA chipset and have NEVER had a problem with DMA. I would download the latest drivers for your mother board and go from there. If you did an upgraded when you installed your os you may have the wrong drivers.

I'm noticing you have SDRAM in system memory and DDR ram on your graphics chip...so can you clarify if that is indeed DDR SDRAM in your system..or the old regular single data rate RAM?

Having 2 different types of RAM could be the cause of your problem.

Also IRQ conflicts point to peripherals....check to make sure you aren't having IRQ conflicts with any chips you have installed. Most Mobo's have PCI 1 & 3 share and IRQ and 2 & 4 as well. Also USB devices will often times share an IRQ so be mindful of that.

Since you have a Via chipset make sure you have the latest VIA 4 in 1's installed..

anyone else have any ideas?

This is what you need to do.

Go into Device Manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > then the advanced tab of your cd-rom, put the cd-rom in the PIO Only mode.
